Candid shots

    Hey,

I was asked to take to candid shots at a wedding last week. The happy couple had booked a “real” photographer to take the posed shots. Even so, the groom approached me because he liked my style. I really wanted to do a good job. Nerves totally got the better of me :x
Any who, I am putting up a few pics. I would love some feedback.

Please be brutal….. it’s the only way I’ll learn!!!!!!!!!!!

    This one is my favourite.

Here is my opinions for what there worth :)
    1. Nice light falling on the alter, I would crop the right side pillars
out so that the alter is symmetrical.
    2. I love the spontaneity of this shot, though would like to have seen
the other hand with the bouquet in.
    3. A nice shot, if you had used portrait format you could have included
the dress and the grooms feet.
    4. Cute shot, but RIBENA in white

Well done, the second time should be a breeze!

    Hi Belinda,

A nice selection of images here and Jenny has given very good critique.

I would probably only include 2 and 4 as candids.

I do think #4 is a brilliant example of a candid photograph.
The subjects seem totally relaxed, unaware of that they are being photographed and doing something
that would probably not be included in the formal set of photographs.
The only picky comment I would make is that the boys sleeve is touching the edge of the frame while there
is a gap between the girl and the edge of the frame. Small but it catches my eye.

#2 is also very good in my opinion.
    The brides expression is fantastic.
Again being picky I would try to either exclude the bouquet or include it all.
As it is I think it’s a distraction in an otherwise lovely image.
Cover it with your thumb and I think you might see what I mean.

#1 in my opinion wouldn’t be included in a candid although it is well exposed and the colour is very good.

I’d be with Jenny re the format of #3 and I’d question whether it could be classed as a candid.
That said it’s a nice photograph and in portrait it could have been very good.

I tried your Flickr link but it didn’t work for some reason.

I’d say don’t lose heart and if you can produce images like #4 here consistently the nerves, hopefully,
will become a thing of the past.

    All the best,

    John.

    Wow…
    Thanks you guys, great comments.

I know the first shot is not really a candid, I just like the image. I was really worried about shots in the church due to lighting, but it wasn’t so bad. Also, I got caretaker to let me up to the balcony.

I totally see what you mean about the flowers in the second shot, I also think I should crop a bit on the oter side too.
The bride was posing for the other photographer, and while he was setting up for the next shot the wind was catching her veil, she was messing with it, so I just snapped away.

In the third shot, the groom who is a total messer, was making faces knowing that bride wasn’t watching him. ye are right, again. Really should have been portrait, it does look a bit odd.

The forth shot can be cropped a bit on flower girl side to even it up a bit.
Yes, purple and white… it was me that bought them, the bride would have loved me if there was a spill. It was the only ‘Kiddie’ drink I could get, God bless the poor kids needed something.

    Attention to detail is everything.
Although I my first experience quite stressful, it was also a learning experience. The groom did was the photographer at my wedding and is currently teaching me Photoshop, so I wanted to impress.
