I like the contrasting warm and cool colours.
I’d probably crop out top bottom and right of shot. Background doesn’t compliment the shot for me

Very interesting. So, I think you’re suggesting this kind of crop:
But I think the contrast between warm and cool colours isn’t as balanced as in the original. So I tried keeping a bit more of the warm top-left background:
But bokeh isn’t as pleasing in my opinion. So how about this one?
Actually, I’m still not completely satisfied with the very last one. You’re very right, though, so I guess I should just go back there and take a more vertical shot :)
That’s the idea alright. Don’t know of a perfect solution as the diagonal line is appealing and the reflections of the front candles in the blue cups adds to the symmetry
I think I prefer the middle composition, I really like the out of focus tiers in the background on the far side of the church.
