Landscape and weddings – Canon 5D would be perfect. That or a 1Ds MkIII.

If your budget is a bit less – Canon 40D … or for lower again, the 400D.

All very good quality cameras … then you just need to get some lenses.

The best advice to give I think……Is to go to camera shop and try both Nikon and cannon out to see which you fell comfortable with.Only you can decide, but which ever you choose, either would be good.

    Depends on your budget….

All the following cameras will produce outstanding results. Each has it’s own pro’s and con’s. And a lot can be said for just holding a camera and how it feels in your hands.

In order of my reccommendations for each market segment:

    Lower end
Sony A100 or soon to be released A200 (I use the A100 and it’s brilliant)
    Canon 400D
    Nikon D40 and D40x

    Mid range…
Sony A700 (which was reviewed in a head-to-head with the 40D and beat it in AP)
    Canon 40D
    Nikon D80
Pentax K10D or soon to be released K20D

    Higher end
    Nikon D300 (stunning camera)
Canon 5D (full frame) or it’s soon to be released replacement
Sony A900 (full frame) soon to be released in 3-4wks

Pretty much all the Canons in the entry to mid price range perform better at higher ISO’s as they control noise alot better than their Nikon counterparts. If you plan to be shooting something like weddings where indoor photosgraphy is a big part of what you’ll be doing then this might be something to consider.
I’m sure you’d be happy with Nikon or Canon once the camera suits your needs. One thing to consider is that Canon lenses are cheaper than Nikon (I think?), withouth considering 3rd party lenses.

Just remember you’re not buying just a camera but you’re buying into a whole system. You want that system to be able to accommodate your needs as you grow and don’t want to find yourself in a position where you end up having to make an expensive switch. Both Canon and Nikon have a very well established history and should be top of your list as options. Have a look at this interesting article on The Luminous Landscape site where one photographer outlines his choice on the basis of lens selection.

Agree with Sean, get to a good camera shop or if you have friends or relative who have a DSLR you can try??

All the best in whatever you end up with, but remember you will need a good lens, especially if doing wedding photography!!

    Hey Thorsten

That article was last updated in 2005, this one may be more relevant

    cheers

edit – I thought he compared lenses on that page as well….guess he just talks about some Nikon lenses. My mistake. Interesting read just the same

You don’t say how many Nikon F mount lenses you have? That’d be a big factor if you have a few.

Anyway, you wouldn’t really go wrong with any of the midrange and above DSLRs from any maker. Fuji have the S5 now, with stellar highlight abilities, Nikon have the excellent D200 or D300 to choose from, and you wouldn’t get any argument from me if you went for a Canon 40D or 5D. They’re all great cameras, all well up to most jobs, and more capable than most of the photographers who use them (I’ll include myself in this just so it doesn’t get interpreted as snobbery!)

I should have read the subject title eh? Canon or Nikon?.. are you looking to start a bar-brawl with questions like that? That?s like asking Cameron Diaz or Carmen Electra, BMW M3 or Audit RS3, Eastenders or Corrie, oh OK that?s a bad one, but you catch my drift?

You?re gonna get ppl defend their chosen stead here. The Canon folk won?t endorse the Nikon and likewise Nikon folk won?t endorse the Canon?s.

So basically it comes down to personal feel or if you can see something in the current line up the tickles your fancy. If you?re really looking a camera for semi-pro purposes, forget about the entry-level (D40, D80 and 400D) and the high-end (1Ds Mk III, 5D and D3) offerings and look at the mid-range, which boils down to the Canon 40D and the Nikon D300.

Now go have a play with both the 40D and D300 and look at the reviews. I know which I?d choose, it would have to be the?..

    Wot? No Pentax… or Sony… or Olympus… or Leica…

Why restrict yourself to market leaders? Or maybe we should all drive Toyotas too…

Rob…. look at the title of the thread…. Canon or Nikon….

But yeah I agree with what you’re saying, if we all used just Nikon/Canon it would pretty boring….
