I suppose really what your asking is the difference of one stop worth the extra money? It’s not unlike the question I’ve been asking myself on the 85mm f/1.2 L and the 85mm f/1.8. Ultimately only you can answer your questions because it really comes down to how you use the lens and what you use it for. In my case, I haven’t yet made a decision as to which 85mm lens I will get, but I’m in no rush and will continue debating this question for myself. I’ve tried both and I know people using both and each has their strong points.
You’re lucky in that the price differential of the lenses you’re looking at isn’t that great (just over 2x). In the case of the 85mm the f/1.2L is five times the cost of the f/1.8 version, so unless I win the lotto or can genuinely justify the expense on commercial grounds, guess which lens I’m leaning towards? (Based on list prices over at AC-Foto)
stcstcMemberyour right thorsten
I was trying to see if there much else different about the lens apart from a stop.
ie quality, if the lens has better distortion figures etc
and in terms of price, well the MK1 16-35 is twice the price and the MK2 is three times at 1200 stg !!!!

Yep that’s a lot of money alright, equivalent to ? 1,800.00 if I’m not mistaken. The price I saw at AC-Foto for the MkII was ? 1,696.00, so I suppose not a lot in it. They have the 17-40mm f4.0L listed at ? 747.00, so that’s what I was basing my calculations on (a factor of 2.27 in the price difference). Might be worth looking at getting it in from HK through the likes of URGalaxy (? 925.00)?
SteveDParticipantWell if the quality of the glass in the new 70-200mm f4 L IS is anything to go by, then this 16-35 MkII will be something pretty special and worth saving for.
