canon 17-85 problems

hi all , my canon 17-85 has recently become permanently stuck at 17mm.after doing some research i have found that this is a common problem with this lens , apparently a screw/screws become loose internally which restrict movement. as far as i know canon charge about 200 to fix it (even though its obviously a problem in the way THEY build the lens) , i have found a site online which shows how to fix the problem , but it involves taking the whole lens apart and im not sure that im brave enough to do it . has anyone else ever gone the d.i.y route ? was it difficult?
I had the same problem with the lens except it stopped at 65mm and 17mm although not pernamently!Luckily I bought mine at conns and when I emailed them about the problem they sent out a replacement within a week. So if you bought yours from a shop they probably should be able to fix/replace it. Hope this helps! Jimmy
