Canon 1D

GrahamBParticipant
Folks,
really quick question to any one using ( or still has ) an original Canon EOS 1D ( circa 1998 )
I have been offered one for what I think it very little money ( about 500 ). However the thing is
4.5mp. Now I know better than most ( still using my 350d ) that megapixel count isn’t everyhing.
What I am wondering is if there is anyone still using this camera how does stack up in today’s
world. Also In terms of Lens compatibility will today’s canon lenses function. Oh and is it full frame.Anyway thanks in advance for any help.
Graham
carstenkriegerParticipantIn the digital world the 1D is a real dinosaur (might become a rarity someday).
All Canon EF lenses will work, for more info have a look at http://photo.net/equipment/canon/eos-1d. Regarding the price I would have a look at the camera first and find out the shutter count! Due to the fact that a 1D will be hard to sell I would start with an offer of € 300.00 and see what happens.
Hope that helps.Carsten

Unless you really need to print BIG then I wouldnt avoid it just because of the pixel count. Great frame rate and great AF. If it is in good nick then 500 euros is fair enough; otherwise look to get a discount.
GrahamBParticipantThanks for the reply folks. Really appreciate them both.
Carsten – thanks for the link a good review there.
Rossco – how Big is BIG. I would never print about 8*10 or slightly bigger.I have to be honest though even though it’s a bit of a relic, I love the look of the thing.
It’ll go well the the rest of the relics I have an use regularly.guthrijParticipantI have an original 1D. I don’t use it simply because I have gone through all the upgrades 1D Mk II, MkIIn and finally the 1D MkIII. I kept the ID for sentimental reasons. It is great old piece of kit, built like a brick sh*t house. It has been dropped and abused but is still going strong. A4 prints are fine, A3 might be pushing it a bit. Another point is that the sensor is of the CCD type not CMOS. That means the 1D does not have a mechanical shutter, the sensor is just turned on/off. It is still the only camera, I think, that will shoot at 1/10,000 of a second. Your 350D will feel like a plastic toy compared to the 1D. €500 seems like a decent price.
Cheers, john
Not Pete the blokeParticipantFor got to add that it is a 1.3 crop sensor (same as all the upgrades to the 1D). Some say this gives you the best of both worlds – longer reach as well as staying away from the supposedly soft edges of the glass. I had one on a trial basis a couple of years ago, and loved the reults I got with it, and I agree that A4 is not a problem for this camera.
At that time I ended up going for the 5D new rather than the used 1D.GrahamBParticipantGents, you may have sold it. I’m not really interested in printing above 8*10 ( as strange as that sounds )
I love the look and and I know I will love the feel. Now to start haggling……markcapilitanParticipantAs the guys said…its a mega camera, real workhorse! If u dont need big prints, go for it. Sharpest images from a digital camera I’ve seen too…too sharp maybe!
guthrijParticipantHere is a very comprehensive review of the 1D with sample pictures and downloadable manuals.
I forgot how expensive it was. It cost $5499 in 2001!
Cheers, John
