Canon 300 F4 L IS Problems

    Hi all

I have the above mentioned lens since April 2006 (so the warranty is busted). I have used it on a 20D and a 5D and have experienced similar problems on both bodies. The problem seems to be somehow related to the IS. When its enabled in IS mode 1 or 2 and in one shot or servo focusing sometimes it locks focusing and then completely stops focusing altogether. Then when I tip the shutter release (to focus) it incrementally moves slowly towards the focus point that I am aiming at. The only way to get it working again is to restart the body. This problem occurs randomly and generally only happens once in an outing. Do any of you have the same lens and have ye experienced similar problems…? The thing is I dont use the lens a whole lot and sending it back to Canon to be fixed could cost quite a bit. Have any of yee had to get a lens fixed with Canon and if so what type of costs would ye be talking about…?

I also have a Canon 200mm f2.8 L that I would like to get serviced and was curious of costs for that too…!

    Anyone…?

    Thanks

    Richie

    In short, I’ve no idea.

Sounds like a USM motor problem on the lens. Have you tried checking the connector pins between the lens and the camera (both camera and lens) to make sure they’re clean?

Also, it might be worth your while registering with CPS (Canon Professional Services). You require two Pro bodies, plus 3 L lenses (so your 20D and 5D qualify you on the body side). Then you can contact the CPS line, and they will give you priority treatment.

No idea on the cost for the service of your lens though.

    Hi Paul

Thanks for the response. I have checked the contacts and they seem ok and even wiped them lightly with an alcohol based cleaner. Funny thing is that a mate of mine has the same lens and has similar problems with the 5D and 20D but just not nearly as often as I have!

I will definitely look into the CPS membership but the thing is I have moved on the 20D body. Also as far as I remember was it not only ‘Pro’ bodies (1 series) that qualified ye for membership. I have 5 L lens so that shouldn’t be a problem…!

    Thanks again

The xxD and xD bodies all count as Pro for Canon.

I registered with CPS when I had a 20D and 40D. They actually list on the website what bodies and lenses they permit to be considered. Worth checking out all the same.

Weird problem you have. Sounds very much like a lens fault, so you may have no choice but to send it to the Canon service centre in the UK. :?
