Brian, I tried this lens a couple of times, mainly for wildlife.
if you plan to shoot outside (and with artificial light if at night), I would go for it.
make sure the AF works as should, and you won’t have problems ;)
not having the IS it’s not a big deal since you have mono/tripod ;)EpixParticipanti mainly used the lens for sport and have found admittedly the best results are when mono/tirpod mounted i have to admit its hard to use handheld. that said the lens is tack sharp the only other lens i own which can match is for resolution is the 50mm f1.4. if you check the reviews they say this lens has sharper optics than the IS version and field and lab tests have proved this. unlike alot of other primes its also very very good wide open. i was usuing it with the 1.4x extender(now sold) which gave me a very good quality 420mm f5.6 lens with full autofocus retained.
BMParticipantI’m looking for something to give me a bit more reach in the football and hurley shots I take for teh local club (mainly monors, but teh seniors are getting jealous!). I use an old EF 80-200 L f2.8 at the moment (monood mounted). It produces great results with great bokeh at f2.8 and f4 but I often feel the need for a bit more reach.
Any pics of the lens?
eclipsechaserParticipantIf I might chime in, it’s a great lens for sports although in poor light you will be limited by the f/4.

THANKS FOR ENLIGHTENING THE FORUM WITH THIS USEFUL INFORMATION BM
positronMemberActually, I did find BM’s comment useful – made me check the dates – thanks BM.
BMParticipantOK, I wasn’t going to comment further in this thread. I have given it some thought and have decided that I am not going to let the matter go lightly.
The post (19 September) by Epix was unhelpful if not downright rude – and Positron was spot on with his reference to the dates.
Epix, you did not afford us the simple courtesy of timely (or any) replies (you did not even reply to my PM of 2nd June). Your actions (and inactions) illustrated a considerable amount of disdain for other members of the forum.
