    Folks,

most of you have probably been asked this question before but
i’m just wondering if anyone has heard anything ( concrete ) on the release
of the 40d. I was just about to purchase a 30d but I have read some internet
chatter that Canon are gearing up to replace the unit.

The rumour-mills sure have been busy! I don’t think we should expect a replacement until September at the earliest. Expect the anti-dust thing, but don’t expect in body IS. I think Canon make too much money from the IS lenses to lose that income!

I would think it will be 10-12MP, and will maintain EF-S compatibility. What I’m really looking forward to is the replacement for the 5D! The 3D possibly??

BTW, I have a 30D at the moment and it is a superb camera. Don’t be afraid to go out and buy one! If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Nothing concrete on a 40d yet I dont think. There is a very big show (PMA) on in LasVegas starting March 8th. Canon seem to have good control on any possible leaks this time. There should be at least one new camera at this show (they have never showed up at this show without a new camera). Most people assume that a new 1 series will be announced for this show but whether the 40D appears is anyones guess.

Heard a lot of rumors about the 40D and also about the 7D to replace the 5D. As far as I am aware the 40D is suppose to be released in USA on Sept 1st, thats just after the 400D has finished its rebate offer. Does anyone know about the integrated cleaning system. does it actually work? has anyone with a 400D ever have to clean the sensor since they received their camera and how often do you change lens?
I am in the process of upgrading and wondered if its better to go 40D or 5D ( I still like the 1.6X crop ) and the cleaning system would be a good bonus. 10.1 MP and the EF-S compatibility are strong rumors

John, I have a 400D for nearly a year now, and I change lenses often enough. I have had some dust in the sensor, but nothing too obvious or bad enough to ruin a photo. I don’t have other cameras so its hard to compare, but my lenses have more dust in them than the sensor, may be thats a sign that the cleaning system is doing something right?

Check out Northlight-Images for a comprehensive overview of the 40D and the 1Ds MkIII (and also speculation of what the 5D replacement is likely to feature when it’s release next spring – definitely worth waiting for)

Just had a look at DP Reviews side by side comparison of the new 40D with the 30D [http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos40d/].

Is it just me, or is the 40D an underwhelming upgrade? I mean, the price that the 30D has come down to in recent months compared to the full price that the 40D is likey to be, are the changes worth it?

People said the same thing about the 30D when it came out. One huge advance with the 40D has surely got to be the fact that it generates 14-bit RAW files. This one fact alone would make me replace my 30D tomorrow if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m holding out for the 5D replacement due next spring.

The EOS 40D, a midprice digital SLR scheduled to go on sale this month. It features 10.1-megapixel resolution. The body-only version is expected to be priced around $1,300.

I think it is. Ignoring a 2Mp resolution increase (10.1 is plenty for most purposes), there’s the 14 bit colour depth, self cleaning, supposed better noise performance, higher frame rate/bigger buffer, some degree of weathersealing, and the fact that the camera doesn’t power off when the media door is opened thus dumping the buffer contents are all worthwhile.
