Canon 40D Off camera flash help.

GoldenballsParticipant
Hi Folks
I would like to try some off camera flash set ups but require some help with equipment.
I have the 40D along with pocket wizards and a sigma 500ST.
I think I’ll need to buy a canon flash 580 II?
Would like to also buy flash stands to hold flash.
Any other help would also be apreciated.

BarkerPhotographicParticipantHappy New Year GB!. We can sort you out with the 580 Mk2, lighting stands (from €50 Inc VAT), Tilt brolly brackets, Brollies or even a Lastolite Ezybox kit, see: http://www.lastolite.com/ezybox-hotshoe-kits.php Just drop us a line from Monday on if you are interested.
Ps for anybody else reading this, there are much cheaper and very good remote triggers than the Pocket Wizard available – like Elinchrom’s Skyport Universal trigger set which is only €149 Inc VAT. Don’t get me wrong Pocket Wizards are the Rolls Royce of triggers- just expensive!GoldenballsParticipantHi Paddy
Thx for the reply.
It is the Elinchrom’s Skyport Universal not the Pocket wizard.
Not great for the pound against Euro now.
Thx for the info.

GoldenballsParticipantHi Paddy
It’s the Elinchrom’s Skyport I have (Not sure if it universal)
How do I connect it to the external flash?
T
BarkerPhotographicParticipantOnly the Universal receiver can be connected to Non-Elinchrom flash units. If you have the Universal unit you will either need a Hotshoe adaptor with a lead with a 3.5mm plug, or a Pocket Wizard 3.5mm to pc Adaptor to which you then connect a standard Hotshoe adaptor.
GoldenballsParticipantBarkerPhotographicParticipantPeteMcDMemberIf the Sigma can be used in manual mode (1/16th, 1/4 power etc) then all you need are the right cables for your skyports.
The Canon 580EX II won’t use ETTL metering with the Skyports.
Either go the fully manual route with cheaper flashes (like your Sigma) and Skyports, PWs or the soon to be released RadioPoppers. Or else get A 580EX and a couple of 580EX/430EXs to use off camera to enable ETTL metering. Both systems have limitations – no auto metering on the manual route, and you’re limited to line of sight with the Canon ETTL route.
