Canon 40D Shutter Release Button Problem

    Hello all,

Long time reader, first time poster…

The shutter release button on my Canon 40D has started acting up, it’s still working but not reliably, especially for sports shots.

What are the options/recommendations for repair, I know of ISS in Dublin but I’ve heard that with them it could cost up to €300 to repair?
-given that my 40D probably isn’t worth much more than that, I think that would be a bit of false economy..

I know one option could be that if I got a battery grip there is a shutter release built into that,
-would that work? ergonomically – for shooting in in landscape? (I’ve never used a battery grip before)

    Hi David,

I’ve had the shutter release button act up on both my 20D and 40D and TBH the shutter count wouldn’t be massive on either.
Maybe I’ve just been unlucky.

    Anyway to your questions.
I’m in the same quandry as you re repair when compared with the cost of a used model.

I was lucky enough to have got a grip as part of the deal when I bought the 40D (used).
When the main shutter release started to act up I started to use the one on the grip.
I now use that all the time without thinking.

Probaly be strange now to use the normal release should I ever get a replacement. :D

BTW welcome to the site and I hope you find it to be a useful resource.

    Cheers,

    John.

I recently had a full shutter button mechanism replaced, but it was on a well used 5D…4 years of pro use, the button had had enough! That was the cost of repair for me also.
