I smell 5D replacement around the corner… and then burnt out credit card shortly afterwards… come to daddy!!!
50D looks mighty tempting though, im sure 5D mk11 will cost twice as much I’d say.
Anyone else thinking this is just about the best option currently available? (anywhere?) I won’t be getting it anytime soon…haven’t even gotten to use my 450D all that much yet…but I’ll be wanting to hang around with you if you get one.
I really think that cameras and lenses are over-rated sometimes… I mean some of the Lo-Fi stuff around here is excellent… and character is often more appealing than technical genius.
That being said (#1)… Human Nature has us all wanting the best that we can afford… the bug, the sickness… you always want more.
That being said (#2)… if someone said there was a biscuit tin and it cost €10 but it gave you the best image quality possibly… then I’d want one.

I wonder if they sit down and have a discussion along these lines.
“So, nikon’s D300 has 12MP. Anyone for 15 then?”
“Sounds good Bob. Now, its also got a 3″ LCD, we’ll need one of those too.”
“And that 6fps frame rate is quite impressive, but 6.3 is quicker…”Etc. Its just camera Top Trumps these days!
Image Quality at high ISO is something that Nikon have made jumps at lately.
Stuff like FPS might be important to wildlife and sports people.
Everything else is really nice to have sorta stuff… well to me anyways.
It all boils down to image quality at the end of the day.

And it all happens so fast and furiously….seems bizarre to me.
I had the same Canon film camera for 18 years.
My dad used the same Brownie instamatic camera for as long as I can remember and up until the day he died.
Not sure I’d go along with John about human nature dictating that we want the best we can afford. Not for entertainment anyway. Heaven knows my dad didn’t need to keep his brownie for about 40 years..he just liked it.
Would this camera be considered Professional standard? Or a backup to the 5D? Who would be most likely to subscribe to this market? I hope I am not coming off as sounding dismissive or sarcastic. I am asking a serious question. It seems a heavy load for someone just entering the DSLR market…a huge learning curve..yet not so compelling that it would attract the photographer who already has a boatload of (relative) state of the art equipment.
What I want to know..is what defines a reasonable standard of upward evolution of tack? I know I wouldn’t want a 40D or 50D because I have a 450D. Am I boring?

Bought the 40D six months ago. My next upgrade will be the 70 or 80D. Not going to fall into that ‘more spec’ trap.
The reason Id go with a 40 or 50D is mainly just the comfort of a good grip, I hate the 400D grip, it doesn’t feel right in my hands! :D
It’d be new lens before 50D for me. My 40D works fine. Anyway, there’s bills to pay before pricey and all-too-frequent camera upgrades.
I leave the 40D is the bag most of the time now and use the 400D for almost everything… I know most people won’t believe me or will disagree… but I think the image quality from the 400D is better than the 40D.
It does look like a great camera and one I wouldn’t mind having, but I’ve never been one to be sucked into upgrade cycles. I tend to limit my upgrades to every other release. I started with the 10D and didn’t upgrade again until the 30D came out. My next upgrade will most likely be the 5D Mk II, although I don’t intend to get this until the middle of next year.
I adopt the same approach with software. I started with PS 5.5 then upgraded to PS 7 and then waited for CS2 to come out, which is what I use now. My next upgrade will be CS4 once it has stabilised after release. I don’t see why I should be giving my hard earned cash to these companies just to keep up with their upgrade cycles and getting little in return for it.
