Canon 50d or 7D?

About to upgrade my camera system to Canon from Pentax. Have been viewing both the Canon 50D and the Canon 7D but cannot decide which. Also thinking of getting the canon 18-200mm lens for everyday use. Can anyone give me their views on either camera and lens to help me decide.

    Thanks

If you are moving, I’d factor in a couple of lenses and perhaps a flash in you budget. I think youi may be better off having a cross section of quality kit – depending on you intention to upgrade in the future of course. Both cameras are good, the 7D being obviously better, but you may consider the 50D with at least two other lenses, such as the 70-200mmLf4 (plenty going secondhand around €450) and the 24-105mmISf4 – and the 50mmf1.8 which can be found for less than €100.

Then go for 500d or 40d instead. With such a lens there will be no significant difference in quality of your photos.

What do you plan on doing with the new camera? Sport or Wildlife? Then I’d go for the 7D as the high fps and Autofocusing system is in a different league to the 50D. If you will only be using it for non fast moving stuff like landscapes, portratis etc., then I’d go for a 40D as it will do all you will ever need and has the high fps also for the occasional foray into sport and wildlife. You will also have over a grand in change from the 40D to spend on lenses etc.

Hi Michael. I have a 50D and think it’s a great camera. It performs very well for what I want it to do, but as Ballyman said, it depends on what you want to shoot. For sport and wildlife, the 7D does have an advantage of a higher fps rate and more autofocus points, but the 18-200mm lens wouldn’t really suit for either sport or wildlife as the focal lenght will struggle in field sports and getting close to wildlife and the lens being f/3.5 is very slow for fast moving subjects especially in low light. For everyday use, I’d tend to go for a less expensive camera and a better / faster lens.

Thanks guys for your views. I have given myself a budget of £3000 in total to change over to a Canon camera and some lenses and flash. I would normally shoot portrait and landscape but looking to try other things. Might go for the 7d and then budget on the lenses (secondhand) to get what i want. My thoughts on going for the canon 18-200 was that i currently use the Tamron 18-250 and find it a good every day use lens for landscape and portraits. Will have to do more research on the lenses.

Thanks anyway guys. More feedback would be appreaciated

    Michael
