Canon 5D

FajitasParticipant
Anyone here use it?
I’m hopefully gonna be purchasing one within the next month or 2.
Is it worth it? Best price I’ve gotten so far is about 2350 euros.
FintanParticipantI’ll be buying one next week I think, just waiting for any last minute surprises in Photokina.
FajitasParticipantSame as myself!
Though more hoping the suprises will put down the price more than anything else though :p
FintanParticipantyea thats it for me too, happy with the body but waiting to see what enters the market
SteveDParticipantI’m looking forward to finding out what the replacement to the 5D will offer. 16MP? Plus all the guff im sure, dust-reduction etc!!
PS: Fintan, hope you will be sharing some images from that 5D with us! I don’t think I have seen any of yours except the polaroids. Do you have an online gallery?
AnonymousParticipantHi Guys
I am the proud owner of the 5D,love it to bits..only downer is that it doesnt have the histo seperate on the back as you have to see it via the screen.Otherwise its superb! I just seen today that a guy in the buy and sel is selling one for 1100 euro and says thats its new(i know hard to believe :? ) just go to http://www.buyand sell.ie and look in the camera section and think its on page 9 or 10 but he’s selling a rake of stuff from Nikons to Cannons. Gonna look into it more, dont know anything about his background but for 1100 u cant go far wrong,i spent nearly 3,000 when it was first launched.
Ben 8)FintanParticipant12mp would be enough for me really, if a 1DS MKIII came out I might hold out for a used MKII though and in that case I just might lose the run of myself and post images online
BTW I’d be nervous of those deals Ben, very nervous.
FajitasParticipantI’d be very careful, Rymus discovered a 5D scam off buy and sell a short while ago.
Be very careful with the Buy&Sell.
richiehatchMemberI have a 5D about 2 months now…. it is by far the best camera I have ever owned… very good image quality and absolutely amazing at high iso’s. I also have the 20D and find the focusing much better on the 5D. I have to say that with this many pixels you do need to have good quality lens. Wide angle is amazing on the 5… reminds me of my brief film days…! As for the buy and sell item… steer clear of it… i went down th road of buying one off there at a similar price and after many emails realised it was a scam…. they are getting more and more clever so be careful..!
(oh yeah… curious as to what Ben means about the histogram on the screen.. its there by pressing the info button while reviewing… he must mean something else)

Not Pete the blokeParticipantSpeculation is rife about Canon updating the 1 series (1DS and 1DIIN) pre-photokina, and also whether this means an update to the full frame 5D also. The 5D has dropped from a SRP of ?2500 to around ?1799 along with a ?200 cashback voucher from Canon , making it ?1599.00.
I am a keen watcher of the Canon outlet on ebay, which sells what are described as ‘refurbished’ Canon products. In my experience this means the box may be slightly damaged or it may be a display camera etc, but anything I have ever bought from them has been in firsty class condition and more importantly, guaranteed for 12 months. In the last few weeks I have noticed that they have been putting up dozens of Canon 5D DSLR’s, along with a few 1D Mark IIN and even an odd 1DS. The 5D’s in particular seem to have 7 or 8 available at any one time. Over a couple of weeks they must have sold over 100+ of them. (Average price seems to be ?1500 which is not much of a saving, and it does NOT include ?200 cashback voucher).
My point is that they seem to be liquidating their stock of 5D’s at a rate I have not seen before, and one possible reason is that it is to make room for an upgraded model. I am certain they would have a bigger stock of cameras such as the 350D and 30D, yet the 5D seems to be the one they are flogging most.Or am I just a conspiracy theorist?? lol (And by the way, man did NOT land on the moon – wise up!)
FintanParticipantI’ve a feeling there will be a minor update to the 5D with this new sensor cleaning mechanism. The 5D will be updated for definite in the spring 07 but anyone would be nuts to buy one a week before photokina.
BTW some clever?? dude found that Canon have mentioned a camera called 1DX in their lattest DPP release.

Anyone who likes to have nothing but the latest model ….would be nuts to buy one a week before photokina
But the 5D can surely be recommended at any time as a first class camera which would provide great results for years to come.
FrankCParticipantIn reply to the original question, I have a 5D which I bought earlier this year.
Brilliant camera with amazing resolution and very good at high ISO (1600).More generally, I think that digital cameras are still going through the “rapid development” phase – just like home PCs were a few years ago.
There will always be a better, faster, higher resolution, cheaper one out “real soon”. Choosing the optimum time to buy is therefore difficult, so you just have to take the plunge for one that (a) you can afford (b) will do what you want it to. All this in the knowledge that it will definitely be superseded in a few years (or sometimes months).
However, just before Photokina is not that time :wink:Not Pete the blokeParticipantFrank
Any major dust problems with the full frame sensor? I am sooooo close to buying a 5D! lolFrankCParticipantNo major dust problems.
I have the Copperhill kit, but haven’t needed to use it yet. So far, just use a big Hama manual blower to clean the sensor, and that’s worked fine.
I’ve just had one visible mark on my images – which was no problem to remove. Now, I routinely check by taking a picture of a white surface at f22 and then clean if necessary.
One issue I didn’t think of originally was taking the cleaning kit abroad. I believe that the Eclipse solution is banned from airlines (nothing to do with the recent issues – it is apparently too dangerous). So I might buy a few of the (expensive) pre-packed swabs to take abroad in case of necessity.
