Anyone who likes to have nothing but the latest model ….would be nuts to buy one a week before photokina

But the 5D can surely be recommended at any time as a first class camera which would provide great results for years to come.

Yes of course it is recommended at any time, I didnt say otherwise. If new models are announced next week it will affect prices across the range. I dont care about having the latest model, hey I’m still using a 10D :) but I do care about getting a good price.

Just thought I’d post this to demonstrate low-light capabilities.
Took this Tuesday in the Port House (if you know it, you’ll know you can barely see in there, let alone take photos).
    ISO 1600, hand-held

Ben, stay away from that Pr*ck, he is a scammer. I contacted to him and we exchanged around 14 mails, within this mails I couldn’t get his contact details. He told me that I will lodge the money into buyandsell and once I receive the camera buy and sell will authorise the payment into his account. All he wanted was my account details but before I gave him the details I contacted to buy and sell to see do they offer this kind of service and they told me that this was a scam. His adds are deleted but seems he updated them recently.

I bought the 1DS Mk II about 5 weeks ago and just started using it last weekend. I am a real Olympus E1 fan (and still am) but I honestly have to admit (and I hate having to admit to anything !) I’ve made a good decision this time. While I’m still working at getting a nice colour balance without having to correct in PS the print quality that I got when I printed today is “to die for”.

My good friend in Dublin, Robert Allen, has both cameras 1Ds Mk II and the D5 and says the quality in the D5 is not all that far off the bigger one……..certainly not as much as the price difference.

I finally got a Canon 5D from the Canon outlet on ebay – 12 months Canon guarantee and a reasonable saving on retail.
For those who aren’t aware of the difference that the full frame sensor makes, here is an image showing the full frame versus the 1.3 crop of 1D MarkIIN versus 1.6 crop of 20D/30D.

The main selling point for me was the large viewfinder – makes it much easier to frame the shot, and makes a big improvement on manual focussing capability. First impressions are very good indeed, although if finances had not dictated differently, I would have kept my 20D as back up, rather than sell it. Too late now………..

If i can find the cash :? i am thinking of buying this camera or it’s updated successor.

But can somebody please tell me why there is so much written about this camera on the forums? it seems that everbody seems to know a story about it good or bad, it must be the most written about camera ever.

5d is so sweet. Really like mine. I dont have a grip on it, which leaves it quite small and discrete (within reason) for a high end camera. And it’s way lighter than the 1dsII. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a high end camera. I am expecting the value to fall though as per the main part of this thread is intimating, but I’d perfer to be taking pictures than waiting for the next big thing. As there will be the next big thing after that, and again, and again…..

Hi, I have 2 x 5d’s and a 1ds mark 1. The first chance I had to try them side by side was in July when I was over in Ireland photographing the Galway Hookers in the regatta at Roundstone Co Galway.
The results amazed me the 5d on which I used a new 24-105 f4 lens compared to the 1ds with a 100-400 was so much sharper, needed far less corection in levels later and gave better colour balance.
I did not try swopping the lenses over as I was out on a friends fishing boat and was certainlt not going to get dust/rain/sea spray/seagull droppings on the chips.
There are two things you have to watch with the full-sized chip cameras-
1_ They require the best glass, almost inevitably ‘L’ series lenses ) I had a canon 24mm tilt lense but the ‘Fringong” was terrible, so I sold it.

2_ They are far more susceptible to dust on the chip..a constant pain in the ar..

    Best wishes
