Canon 70-200 mm F4 IS or no IS

Looking for a decent walkaround Canon zoom lense to replace my kit lens. I have a 300D. From the reviews I have read the L glass blows all others out of the water so it just comes down to a choice between 70-200 mm F4 with IS or no IS

The price difference is significant but is it worth it to have the IS? Any thoughts?

I’d get the IS version! In fact, I’ve already started saving for it. In it’s short life, it has quickly gained a reputation of being one of Canon’s sharpest lens’, if not THE sharpest.

However, I personally don’t think it would make a suitable “walkabout” lens. It’s much too long for that, especially if using a “crop-sensor” camera. However, this depends on what you’re shooting when you’re on “walkabout”. A better choice might be something like the SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)

I have the non-IS version and it is tack sharp

Like thorsten said, not sure its great as a general lens. But it great for candids and short distance bird shots etc

I have both lenses. Both brilliant, not quite as sharp as my primes. I need IS in churches so upgraded. Kept the non-IS for backup. But yes, not a walk around lens – 70-300 DO would be a walk around lens.

i couldn’t justify the is version for my occasional bird shots, but if i was thinking about doing a wedding, then yes, i’d probably have gotten the is version. its a great lens, my best advice would be to think about how you plan on using it.

I have the non IS version and absolutely love it. Cracking little lens.
But as has already been posted here, it will all depend on how you intend using it….

    Hi,

I have the non IS version and i am sorry I didnt go for the IS version.
It has the reputable L build quality so is heavy and in low light conditions can be problematic.

As said above isnt really an all round lens but is great for certain occasions.

i bought it second hand from a shop in Dublin but was ripped off.

I paid ?620. I was in Amsterdam in the summer and saw a brand new version IS in a camera shop window for ?599 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Save a while longer and shop around !

    best of luck.
