Canon cashback bulls***

JMcLParticipant
I’ve just got a letter back from Canon saying the ?30 cashback I’m due on a lens I bought in June has been declined as the receipt was dated after the qualifying period for the promotion. This is utter BS, the promotion ended on June 30th, the receipt I submitted is very clearly dated June 21st. It was mid July before I got around to submitting the claim, but according to their website, claims can be submitted up until October, so long as the receipt is dated within the promotion period.
Of course there’s no contact info on the letter, and somebody mumbling that they “Can’t answer the phone now” when you call the number on the website.
Has anybody else been fobbed off like this, and if so had any joy banging heads together? Of course they didn’t send back the barcodes, so that’s probably going to be a sticking point if I ever do manage to speak to something human at Canon. Tossers.

ThorstenMemberIt’s probably not Canon that made the decision to decline, but whoever they have in Tipperary that’s running this for them (can’t remember the company’s name now) and they probably aren’t clued into the exact terms and conditions.
FintanParticipantSome shops will tell you to ‘keep after’ canon if theres any hiccups, so I’d say this isn’t unusual.
CerberusParticipantI’m waiting on ?230 cashback myself, so hopefully this is an isolated case. The phone number for the place in Tipp is 1850 930 278, if you leave your name and number and the nature of your problem , they will get back to you (next day in my case). Hopefully your problem can be resolved in this manner.
If not Canon are ultimately responsible and you should contact them.
I don’t think Canon are trying to shaft you but I do understand your frustration at the ineptitude of the third party involvedLet us know of any progress
JMcLParticipantThe PFO I got didn’t look like official Canon stationary (it had “You can …Canon” logo but beyond that nothing). As a business communication it’s probably not even strictly legitimate, there’s no contact details, or even identification as to who’s sending it (my accountant pointed out to me exactly what should be on company stationary a while back!).
?230 is a bit rough, hopefully that goes a bit smoother and you got somebody capable of reading!
John
FrankCParticipantI have successfully claimed before with no problems.
I currently have a claim in with them, with very similar circumstances – bought it in June, sent claim in two weeks ago.
I took the precaution of photocopying the barcode before I sent it, but there’s another on on the box anyway – just in case.
I will let you know how I get on.
carlParticipantI had no problems getting my cashback recently on a Canon 5D. They were just a little slow processing it. However, there have been all sorts of problems in the US over Canon Cashback claims. From what I gathered the company that Canon appointed to process the cash-back dragged their feet on huge amounts of claims stating that they didnt receive the correct barcodes etc. or they post a much lower cashback value to the customer and hope to hear nothing more from the customer. This was all over dpreview about 6 months to a year ago. I’m not saying that Tipperary is doing this but it is interesting that you have had this problem given Canon’s past history.
Just do a search in DpReview for “Canon Rebate”
Here is one example:

This is the rebate fulfillment house that Canon used in the US.
markcapilitanParticipantAlways used the Canon rebates in the US as I bought the kit over there, never had any problems. I think as long as everything is done as it says, it should go through fine.

i’ve always had problems with them. its the rebate center in arizona, not canon themselves. they always decline me (three or four times now) saying i didn’t include something. i always have to send in a copy of something for them. first time i thought maybe i left it out by accident, but after that i realized that they were just giving me the run around. i do end up getting my rebates after calling them and talking to a manager and sending in my copies…
bethJMcLParticipantJust to update, I got a call back from whoever’s handling it, and explained the situation, that the invoice was within the promo period etc. She agreed that should be fine, and asked me to email/fax the invoice again, which I did. On looking again, I did notice a potential bluebottle in the ointment – it would appear the lens is a grey import, as there’s a US/Canadian warranty card with it, and we all know how Canon love be protectionist about their local markets Still that’s not the reason they initially rejected the claim, so we’ll see!

FrankCParticipantJMcLParticipantIt goes from one extreme to the other, having sent off another copy of the receipt and application form last week, I’ve just received not just one, but TWO cheques! I’m feeling in an honest mood, so I’ll make sure one is well lodged and then tell them about the other I think.
