Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

A friend of mine is going to New York soon and I’m thinking of asking him to bring back the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM. I intend to use it for family photos and portraits. It’s priced at 230 euro approx at BH which is a very good price, is this the right lens for family photos and portraits or would I be better off getting something else.

On a 1.6 crop sensor it is very good. It works great in available light. The f1.2 is awesome but costs a whole lot more.

It’s a brilliant lens. I love it. Very sharp, quick to focus, and well worth the price.

Yep, it’s a great lens and you’d be hard pressed to get a better portrait lens for a crop-factor camera for under $1k. If you have a full-frame camera you’d need something a bit longer, up in the 85mm range. The EF 85mm f/1.2 is the classic portrait lens from Canon, but you’ll pay dearly for it.

    Cheers,

For family photos & portraits it’s perfect even on a full frame (I use it on a 5D), I find 85mm a bit long for family photos, great for head and shoulders portraits but the 50mm f/1.4 is brilliant especially indoors. My favourite lens… well at least until I get my hands on a 35mm f/1.4 L :D

Thanks for all the comments, good news also for me in the currency market as an expected interest rate cut in the states tonight will weaken the dollar even more against euro. Happy days!!!!!!

BTW. I’m using a 400D so the lens should work well.
