clawlessParticipant
HI,
I AM TRYING TO START OUT AND I AM GOING TO BUY A CANON EOS.
A FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHER RECOMMENDED 20D BUT FROM OTHER RESEARCH I HAVE READ THAT 30D IS FAIR BETTER.CAN ANYONE ADVISE PLEASE.
ALSO WHERE IN IRELAND IS THE BEST PLACE TO BUY? IS IT SAFE TO BUY FROM EBAY ETC??
THANKS
v4hondaMemberI know of one photographer who owns both bodies, and much prefers the 20D
SteveFEMember30D has:
more metering options
bigger LCD
ISO3200 built in (I think)
picture styles (JPG preset options)It’s not a totally major upgrade from 20D but is worth having, especially the big review screen.
eBay is all about common sense. Avoid anything that looks too good to be true. High end DSLRs and lenses at stupid bargain prices are a sure sign of scammers. Look for retailers or sellers who look like they’ve put some thought into their postings. Be aware that overseas stores like Singapore or HK may have low prices and be good sellers, but you’ll more than likely get an import duty invoice along with the box.
If you want to avoid eBay and deal with a good straightforward camera shop, try Ffordes in Inverness ( https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm ). They have lots of secondhand stock including 20Ds at sensible prices, and I’ve heard lots of good reports about them.
John GriffinParticipantIf you buy in Ireland you will pay twice as much as you would pay in New York, depending on how much your willing to spend you could have a nice holiday in New York for a week and come home with a bag full of new kit, all for the same as you’d get the camera for here, if you haven’t got time to go yourself then send the girlfriend/wife(or both) as a special treat, birthday, xmas present, whatever. Then “and while your there honey could you get me a camera in this shop”(note for B&H or Adoroama staff) pay by credit card on the net, very important!! otherwise its “your spending how much on a f*cking camera and it weights a f*cking ton and comes in a rucksack” :x . You win every way :) , unless of course you get caught by customs, highly unlikey though. Thats what i did anyway. 8)
stephenrdMemberYou should try http://www.cam-ireland.com
The prices are similar to what you would find in Hong Kong but they’re based in Germany, so no vat or duty to pay.
Delivery isn’t too bad either, and insurance is included.

earthairfireParticipantI have a 20D and LOVE IT but the spot metering and larger display would be great tools for me.
Not enough to justify changing to the 30D for me, but worth consideration if you’re looking at buying one or the other…Tim
