Canon EOS 400D or Nikon D40X
-
mehfestoParticipant
Just checking out the deals in Camera Exchange today and saw these two within my price range.
I have a fujifilm 6500f, which isn’t even an SLR, so Im wondering which is the better camera. The Canon is 30 quid cheaper and comes with a free 2gig memory card. Does it have auto focus though? Know that may be a stupid question, but it wasnt mentioned in the leaflets I was reading!
Thanks in advance!

RGH_PhotographyMemberLOL so it does ha …well the D80 is more expensive and the D40 is the market equlivent of the 400D…. Its much of a muchness mate tbh but i love canon stuff i found the nikon hard to use thats why i didnt bother i had both for a week when i was buying :)
stcstcMemberthe best advice is to go into a camera shop and hold both of them,
they are both fine cameras
the one thing to be wary of is the nikon d40 can only use the nikon digital autofocus lenses i belive
MarkKeymasterThe general Canon vs Nikon debate tends to be pointless to be honest and never comes to anything.
Regarding your question on auto focus, both will AF for you for sure.
The Nikon D40(x) can only auto-focus with AF-S lenses though, so that it a bit of a limiting factor.
Essentially it doesn’t have an internal motor and depends on the one on the lens, which only AF-S (S is for Silent Wave)
have.Best advice you can get is to go and handle them both. (fyi I’m a Nikon user)
Let us know what you decide. :)
SteveFEMemberYep. Canon will AF with every EF (EOS system) lens ever made in the last 20 years (but watch out for ancient Sigmas, as their electronics often give errors because Sigma never actually got the full spec on the electronics from Canon). Nikon D40x will only work with AF-S lenses (fairly recent) as Mark says, although it will mount every Nikkor lens ever made (Nikon’s F mount has been around forever). Pre-AF-S Nikkor AF lenses relied on mechanical screwthread drive from the camera body, which the D40x doesn’t have; it can only AF lenses with the appropriate electronic AF drive (ie AF-S).
rerunMemberor wait for the 450D to hit the shops…
