Final update, if it’s any help to anyone in the same boat. I was trying to shoot M, but the camera, even with ISO 1600, was pushing shutter speeds to their lowest, with the inevitable blur in some shots.
Soryy Freddie, but I don’t understand this? If you were in manual mode, the camera cannot change the shutter speed – only you can do that. Your lens is not particularly fast, especially when zoomed out. That is why the 50 1.4 would be wayyyy better. I would have suggested Camera in full manual mode, shutter speed of 1/60 sec, ISO 800 or higher if necessary, and wide aperture. Keep your flash in ETTL mode and use FEC as necessary.
