Canon IX-1S "bridge" camera versus a DSLR

Hi all, I’m currently using a Canon Powershot and I’m thinking of buying the new IX-1S which Canon are calling a “Hybrid”. The reviews online are super but at the end of the day its just a very very posh compact and it retails for €540-600 in Dublin or £400stg online. Should I ignore it and jump straight into a DSLR? the complexity of the DSLR’s is putting me off a bit. Any advice welcome.

Do you mean the SX1 IS by any chance? Dpreview.com wasn’t very enthusiastic, only giving it a “recommended [just]”

Hi, yes! sorry, I got my S’s and i’s mixed up. its the SX1-IS. I was in one camera shop today and he dismissed it and tried to sell me a DSLR. I’d like some sort of balanced opinion on the thing.

Choice depends on how far you want to go, photographically.
A bridge camera is a compact with more abilities, but still limited
because of the relatively small sensor, and the lack of interchangeable
lenses. While they often have very extensive zooms, this usually limits them
at the wide angle — and the extreme focal lengths of the zooms can be difficult
as much because of camera shake in all but the best lighting conditions. They
are good for travel, if you want to go light. Many people don’t like electronic viewfinders.

If you want to go further in photography, then a DSLR is the route; there are plenty
of ‘entry-level’ cameras, and these are designed to be easy for beginners, but do
allow you to progress, and take over more of the control; and the quality of results
is/should be much better. If you go for an entry level camera, consider a possible later
move up the ladder — you are potentially entering a ‘system’, not just getting a
    camera.
