Well, one of the best value-for-money all round lenses IMHO is the SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) I have one of these myself and it’s a cracking performer. I picked it up for a little over ?300.00 new about two years ago and I still love it. Pretty much every review I’ve read of it has always been very positive, for example Bob Atkins’ review and user reviews here.

That one has a great rep as a walkaround lens.

Seconded absolutely. My most frequently used lens, and first choice; results are excellent. It has a good reputation and if my work depended on it I’d buy a second as a spare.

    ….but it doesn’t

I very much doubt that you’ll be very happy with 28 mm max for landscape work.

I use the Sigma 17-70 a lot and am very happy with it.
I also heard good things about the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro

I have to agree with Thorsten and the others.

I’ve only just started photography and also went with the 350D. My first lens was the Tamron 28 – 75mm. I can’t fault it, sharp, clean images every time! It’s a perfect walkaround lens with a decent zoom, although the AF is a little noisey. I use this lens about 70% of my time out and about.

I picked mine up on ebay for about ?400, but you can probably find one cheaper if you scout around.

Pretty much anything can do the job and even earn you money really. I’m a rank amateur, but I did once get a nice ?300 payout for a windfarm shot, taken into the sun, with a very cheap Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 zoom (to put it another way, the job more than paid for the lens; it ran in New Scientist as a lead picture for an article on “the hidden cost of clean energy”).

I’ve yet to earn a bean with my 17-40L ;-)
