canon lens: is vs non is

Howra lads
Basically Im buying a new lens and am getting a bit bogged down on which one i ‘need’. I shoot mainly motorbike racing, I am trying to decide between two lenses: a canon 70-200 f2.8 L (about €1000 new) or a canon 70-200 f2.8 IS (mark 1/2?) (fair bit more money €2600 new I think)
I read somewhere that the ‘is’ wont make much difference if using a monopod, tis a heavy enough lens (compared to anything I have anyway) so i would be using the monopod with it.
would it be worth it to keep saving for another while and try and get a second hand one with ‘IS’ or get a new one without?
Thanks for reading and sorry if its in the wrong section (or been covered before)
Thanks Niall.
miki gParticipantHi Niall.
I don’t think IS is too important if you are shooting in reasonably good lighting & you can keep the shutter speeds up, especially if using a tripod or monopod. Upping the ISO can bring up the shutter speeds, but you might get some noise in your shots & that can be removed using software if necessary.voicuParticipanti see no problem here. the one with IS has the option of switching it on/off. so why get one without? the IS can be helpful even with a monopod but the main thing is to think about the future. let’s say, you can do without IS now but what happens if tomorrow, the stunning blonde girl at the start (the one with the flag) is asking you to take a photo of her and you don’t have the IS lens? just saying: if you don’t needed, you can switch it off, but if you need it and you don’t have it?

yeah i guess the problem is I want it now! and dont wanna save/wait for the is one, if the non is one would do similar, very good point about the future though
thanks lads, I think I will wait for an is one (maybe get one second hand for around the grand?)
not to be wrecking heads but what is the difference between mark 1 and mark 2? age?
miki gParticipantHave you given any thoughts about the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS HSM. It would be cheaper than the Canon & rates very well.

if miki g is talking about dpreviews, than here is the difference between the lenses (improved in any aspect):
