Canon telephhoto L lenses

Hi ,
I am off to New York in a few weeks and I am going to B&H and I want to replace my Sigma 50-500mm with Canon L glass.
I have decided to buy the 70-200mm F/4 L but I am having difficultly choosing between the Canon 300mm f/4L IS with a 1.4x teleconverter and the 400mm f/5.6L
I have play with Steve C’s 400mm and it’s really quick to focus but I really like the idea of having IS for doing panning shots especially of birds in flight and wildlife.
Has anyone compared both of these lenses, which did you choose and why? Thanks
DarraghstcstcMemberyou shouldnt be using IS for panning shots, it will screw them up, thats why some of those IS lenses have two modes for IS, one for everything and one for only vertical movement

But surely that means you can still use the IS for vertical movement/panning, no?
markcapilitanParticipantGo with the 300mm F4 (if you cant stretch to the F2.8 ). It’s a much better lens than the 400. Stick a converter on it if you need extra reach…but with the 400, you’ll never be able to get 300mm at f4. Oh, if you can stretch to the 70-200 with IS, do, its a better lens than the non-IS…only just though! And yes, don’t use IS for panning, it makes the viewfinder jumpy looking and can put you off panning properly…I found anyway.
aoluainParticipantI second the 70-200 F4 L with IS,
I have the non IS version and boy was I ripped off!
there was a big window in the shop!!
anyway its a great lens, adn a friend has the IS version even bettrt!A
darraghParticipantI went into B&H and they didn’t have either the 300mm f/4 or the 400mm f/5.6 but I had a play with the 300mm f/2.8 and I was hooked.
I squeezed my budget and went for it and 1.4x converter. It’s a beautiful combination, absolutely pin-sharp and blindingly fast.
Blowing all my budget means that I’ll have to put with using my missus 70-200mm f/4L for now .Darragh
markcapilitanParticipantGood call on the f2.8. One of canon’s best lenses. I sold one years ago, and regretted it…until I bought another last year. I’ve only used it once since buying it, but at the price I got it for, I wont be selling it again  The only real difference in the 70-200 IS/non IS is the IS! I have both lenses, and need IS in dark churches, but otherwise the non-IS is superb….and superb price too.
paulParticipantThe 300mm f/2.8 is a brilliant lens. Add the 1.4x TC and you have a great lens combination (effectively a 400mm f/4).
The 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L is also a great investment.
You’ll certainly have some fun now.
