Canvas Printing

    Hi

Just thought I’d share this.. The Camera Centre in Talaght is doing canvas prints at excellent prices.

    20*30 inch for €59.99
    16.5 × 23.4 for €49.99
    11.7 × 16.5 for €39.99

The prices on their website are well out of date. I got 2 large prints done the weekend and the quality is excellent.
Please note that these are not mounted but thats reasonably easy to do, or they can send them out for you at extra cost.

so those prices are just for prints?

if so they are not that cheap, just about the norm

for example my 30*20 print on canvas is 65 euro, but thats on one of the top quality canvases, which most of the retail places dont use

    Hi Steve

In comparison to sites like photobox, spectra etc the prices are cheaper. I suppose its about advertising though I saw their advert not yours but youre still a five dearer. Its better in my pocket…. but I’m sure you give a discount to PI members. :) What weight canvas do you print on anyway?

Also have any locations in mind for the Exhibition. I suggested a couple in the original thread that could be of use. Anyway I hope the plans are going well.

I’ll remeber you next time. The camera center is on 358gm canvas so not much of a difference there.

True Ken. Well for some it is, I’d be handy enough with an auld saw myself. A decent chop saw and youre away… but for canvas only.

I did my first 2 canvas mounts on Tuesday evening. Took about 3 hours between making the frames and stretching the canvas.
They turned out excellent. I was thinking of documenting it for the projects section (although someone probably has already.) but hadnt really got the time as I had to have them ready for Today. (Wifes B’day)

I have recently got a canvas print done approx 26″x30″ which was to establish for me how well it would reproduce sharpness at that size. No issue with that when done but is it a feature of canvas printing that the matt surface will reproduce a ‘flat’ look which is what i have noticed on the final print.??
I dont have much experience with canvas printing & would like to get more done if I can match the quality with the likes of Epson 3800 prints that I do for myself.
Appreciate any comments from those that know about this stuff.
    thanks,
    Gerry

you can sortout the flat look in various ways

    1. use a coated canvas, i dont like them but it is possble
    2. use a hot vacum press to add a laminate surface over the canvas, various ones available
    3. use a spray finish or paint on finsh, i dont like there but they are available

takes me about 10 mins to strech a canvas now, but having the right tools makes a big big difference

I’ve had quite a few canvas prints made,
and the print quality has always been good.

However, things can usually only go downhill from there-

Varnish applied by brush is my preference,
better than the dry-mounting laminates, in terms of how the print looks.

Varnish applied by mini roller can lead to reflections on the surface of the print when viewed obliquely,
leaving unwanted traces of the hand of the artist.

    Then the framing-
it’s heartbreaking to see a good print badly stretched-
particularly visible in lumps around the folds in the corners-

As with anything else, the closer you get to perfection,
the more the imperfections stand out,
and I’ve seen prints ruined by lumpy corners.

If you ever do get a canvas properly printed, varnished, stretched and framed,
it can be a really nice thing, but it helps if you can specify these things up front-
what might seem obvious often isn’t, unless you spell it out in advance.

It may sound like telling somebody how to suck eggs,
    but everyone has different standards,
and it’s an unnecessary hassle to find that out when you go to collect your print…

btw, I haven’t had one of Steve’s prints yet,
    but I’m sure they’d be perfect…

    thanks JB

i do agree with you the specifying everything can help

there are soooo many methods of finishing etc, that some people will see one persons finished product as not what they like and vice versa
