Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f1.4 For Sale

Hi,
In an effort to reduce my lens collection, I’m offering the above for sale.
It’s mint & boxed, with front and rear caps and instructions, apart from one defect.
If you look at the following images of the lens closely, you’ll see two very small holes in the lens housing (on the front, after the T* and after the s in Zeiss). These have absolutely no bearing on the image quality, and are only cosmetic.
I’ve used this lens on a Canon 1ds2 with a C/Y to Eos adapter, with excellent results (adapter not included, but readily available from ebay & others for around €15)
Obviously, this would be manual focus, with stop down metering (metering works in aperture priority or manual)
The build, image quality and colour rendition of this lens is superb.
Put it on a crop sensor and you have a brilliant, super fast 80mm f1.4 portrait lens.Here’s an image taken recently on a full frame Canon 1ds2
And here’s a 100% crop of that image.
If you were to print this image at this resolution, the resulting print would be over 5 feet wide!!It’s my opinion that if you want the ultimate in image quality, Carl Zeiss prime lenses can’t be beaten.
So, if it’s so good, then why am I selling?
I purchased this lens, together with a Zeiss 50mm f1.7, and (the one I really wanted) a Zeiss 28mm f2.8, in one lot.
I already had the Zeiss ZE 50mm f1.4 (at a cost of x4 the price of this lens), which left me with three 50mm Carl Zeiss lenses.
Obviously, I only need one, hence this sale, and the pending sale of the f1.7.If it hadn’t got the two tiny holes in the casing, this lens would normally sell for twice what I’m asking, which is €160.
So pick yourself up a bargain for the ultimate in image quality.Thanks for looking

It was captured in raw with a small amount of contrast adjustment applied in photoshop, bot No Sharpening whatsoever was applied.Rog

I may be interested in this lens but I have a question regarding the two cosmetic holes in the front metal ring. Was this lens repaired at any stage? The holes look like they are across the diamemter of the lens where a lens spanner may have been used to remove the front ring. Thanks in advance for any info.

I bought the three Zeiss lenses together from Alan McDonnell, who had a camera repair shop in Portabello.
He said when testing the lenses, the aperture was sticking occasionally on the f1.4, so the only way in was to drill these two holes.
He gave it a general cleaning while he was in there.
I don’t know much about the mechanics of lenses, but I do know he’s a recognised repairer, and if he said everythings fine, I’d belive him, and I think the results bear this out. After all, he was the official Hasselblad repairer while he was there also, and if it’s good enough for Hasselblad, it’s good enough for me. :wink:
