Shot of area of the Burren near Carran from last April. Not sure about this shot. Any suggestions or editing greatly appreciated. I have been thinking about a B&W conversion.
Cheers,
MJSteveFEMemberI find the Burren easy and difficult to shoot simultaneously. Easy because everywhere you look are lunarscapes, bare rock, stunted windblasted trees etc. Hard because it’s difficult to fit what you see with your eyes into a pleasing composition. I’m often wanting a superwide and a tele at the same time if you know what I mean, wide for the whole scene and tele for the tiny details on rocks and such.
If I were to be critical of this shot it would just be because I’m sure you could have got a better one from 50yds up the road! It may be a clich? but a lone tree is usually perceived as more dramatic than a small group. Burren’s also a place where you really can make use of a wide, by getting down dead low (like on your belly), and using a rock as really close foreground while keeping shrubs and sky in focus as background.
RobertoMemberSteve is right!
Burren is the place for wide landscapes (with dificulty of composition) and close detailed shots.
Your shot is good for study. Now you can see what details or more wide (from bottom) can be done next time.SteveFEMemberA couple of examples of what I was banging on about:
Grovelling down low:
Foreground, middle and distance all sharp:
The solitary blasted tree:
It is a place that really rewards the determined groveller!
RobertoMemberI love the third one Steve for its atmosphere.
Did you do lot of PS work on it?SteveFEMemberRoberto wrote:

Did you do lot of PS work on it?Can you tell? ;) Yes, loads. Adjustment layers with gradients and a lot of colour fiddling. It was shot in nice-ish light but I’m not one for leaving it at just that. Sometimes I aim to please just myself and stuff the purists!
RobertoMemberBut the original shot had to be OK, otherwise you would not make this nice photo with PS.
All four photos nicely demonstrate what can be done on ‘lunarscape’ type of lands.griangrafParticipantSteve/Roberto,
Thanks for your advice & comments. I have to agree shooting in the Burren can be a bit of a head wrecker. I have a number of other shots from that day in April that I will post shortly.
Cheers,
MJ
SteveFEMemberSorry for diverting your thread a bit. 4 pics may have been a bit OTT to demonstrate the point. But yeah, deep focus and wide angles is the way to go I think.
