Took this last week, but it was a dull day. There was some interesting light on the mountains behind, but the image is a bit dead. Anyone like to have a go at editing the original here. Any comments on composition would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
RobertoMemberThorstenMemberI like this. You might try the following in PS to bring a bit more to life.
1. Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. Amount=20, Radius=30, Threshold=0. Notice how this “de-fogs” the image? Repeat if you think it can benefit froma stronger effect.
2. Convert the image to LAB color mode.
3. Add a Curves Adjustment Layer and steepen the A and B curves. Do this by selecting the A channel from the Channel drop-down and then clicking on the very top of the diagonal curve and then pulling it towards the middle by a small amount. Now click on the very bottom of the diagonal and pull that in by EXACTLY the same amount. Repeat for the B channel). Now go back to the Lightness channel and click and hold the mouse pointer in the highlight area of the sky and see notice how this shows a point on the lightness curve. Pull that part of the curve down or up (depends on how you have your curves set up) so that it brightens the sky are somewhat. That’s it – all done.SodafarlMemberSteveDParticipantfig,
I think a vertical format would have worked better here, to get rid of the dead space to the front left and right.
What were your shutter speed and aperture settings for this one? Which camera were you using?

I think a tight crop into a panorama works well too. I noticed it while the image was loading from top to bottom – suddenly this wonderful panorama appeared in front of me. As it continued to load, some of that inital impact was gone, but I still like it as an image. You could almost get lost in it.
Looks like it was taken on a Nikon D50, 1/5″, f/18, 45mm.
figParticipantThanks for all the comments guys. Unfortunately I don’t have PS yet so I’m a bit limited in my editing. I agree the dead space is a bit of a disapointment. I think I will go back here soon and spend some more time looking for some foreground interest and spend a bit of time on the shot.
Mick451ParticipantLovely light in that photo, fig, looks almost like a painting.
quick edit:
ciaranParticipantI like the first one.. but here’s my early morning attempt (perhaps over did the sharpening when i resized for web)
figParticipantThat’s the one for me. The photo seems to have more life in it and the composition is much better. Thanks.
LoGillParticipantGreat shot to start with – looks like a Paul Henry painting to me.
The protrait crop is superb (well done Ciaran… (5.30 am ??… Jeeeez ;) )
LovelyL
SteveDParticipantsnaphappyMemberhey fig I live in limerick to i have a copy of photoshop elements I could give you just mail me back and i will drop it into a hotel or pub of your choice for collection. even if you were not into learning photoshop the the autolevels and autocontrast functions would really help your work.
katieParticipantReally like the original and Mick451’s edit. The tones in the orginal are beautiful, makes Castle look like a totally different spot to the place I know and love, almost Arabic. Very nicely composed shot, lovely solitary feeling, the kinda place I would love to be right now, or at 4am :)
