Any critique appreciated, fairly new to photography.

I can only assume it’s barley in the third shot?
Would have preferred to have seen the ‘barley’ more in focus than the background
but you might have been limited by your lens. Same regarding the poppies in 2.
I think you need to tweek the contrast a little but a nice shot in no’ 3.

    i agree with john17

2 and 3 are nice photos.

if you focus on the barley or poppies or anything else in the foreground
and use a small f# like 2.8 or 4 the camera will make everything in the background
blurred to the foreground stands out more !

welcome to the site and keep shooting

Thanks for the comments, I was using a Nikon 18-55mm lens (came with the camera, D40). Hoping to upgrade my camera and get a new lens or two shortly. Would a wide angle lens help with shots like that was looking at getting the Tokina AF 12-24mm, seems to be getting decent reviews online.

i dont think you need to change your kit.

a wide angle lens wont make any difference to the result as suggested above.
    its more about technique.

It is generally easier to get a shallow depth of field with a standard to long focal
    length lens.
