OK! You asked for it :)

    1)
Whites are too bright. Focus is all wrong.

    2)
Don’t like the composition. Too much empty space and not enough subject. The main focus should be the eye (like a portrait) but it’s too dark.

    3)
Doesn’t work for me. Subject is too small and the surrounds being out of focus means I don’t get a sense of the place … that should be the justification of this composition. I’m guessing you were a victi of lens reach like the rest of us motals :)

I like the composition of the first one, a bit too tight though. Yeah, as Aidan said, focus is not right.

Second one, I like the backlighting, but too much space to the left.

Third, nice shot, I like it, but I think it could be made better by cropping out about 40% top and right…

    1. – I think if you stepped back a bit and allowed some of the curve of the neck into the frame a wee bit it could have made a difference to the composition. It does seem out of focus also.
    2. – A nice idea, but a bit too much empty space in the frame I think.
    3. – I quite like the shallow DOF here – but again a bit too much empty space. As positron suggested, a crop from the top right would improve this a lot I think. Very nicely exposed for that bird though, fair play.

No. 1 is a bit soft. I’d have been tempted to hide it as much as possible by sharpening hard and posting a smaller JPEG.

No.2 is unusual for a bird shot. You may have done better with the light in a different direction.

No.3 is lovely except the bird is a bit small in the frame and you didn’t get his best side.

    Keep posting.

    Pete
