Checkboard droplet

This was an exercise I saw in a photography magazine and so had a go. The tutorial did say to shoot this outside but I did it on my kitchen worktop but in front of a window. My tripod was a packet of kitchen towels and then I drew the water up in a straw and then with a cable shutter release just basically shot as the drops fell. It was something to do on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The water was in a clear Pyrex dish and the checkboard is a chessboard underneath the dish and then converted to B&W in Elements.

    So what do you think?

    Well stolen idea. :)

It looks good, nice photo. I just see a couple of black lines in the back left and right corners, are these from the edge ofthe pyrex dish (which is what they look like) or are they caused by the distortion of the water? A slight flaw in the picture, in my opinion. Apart from that it’s great.

its the distortion of the ripples of water

    Wow this is amazing!

I may have to try it myself.
Thank you as well for the detailed account of how you did this… something I love it when photographers do!

    Hi pihjin,

do have a go and dont forget to post your shot when you do. I had to fool around with shutter speeds to get it right with my own camera if I remember correctly it was 1/30 but its just a case of being patient (which I’m not lol)

    Good luck.
