well, being a chess player i suppose it would be rude not to comment. :) Exceptional use of DOF, great positioning of the rook in the frame. I might darken the material under the board just to keep the eye on the board. very nice :)

mmmm From what looks like frosted glass figures the pieces nearest to the camera look a little flat! I would love to try a infra-red version of this
Like the composition,DOF,Angle,Crop etc so well done.
More of a solitaire man myself :D

Probably a bit more contrast added might lighten it up slightly

If the shadows and highlights were adjusted separately using calculations for example, it would be possible to bring the background to pitch black, while adding emphasis to the contours and details in the highlights. The individual figures could then ‘pop’ off the screen without affecting the brightness of the midtones.

The IR idea as suggested could well be worth trying out also.

maybe take it again with the board the other way around with the clear pieces to the front and the frosted pieces to the back. They do look a little flat. The clear pieces would look really well up front and in focus I would imagine. Overall a very nice shot though.

This was my first attempt at this kind of set up so i was quite pleased with the outcome and thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.
