I went out on Monday morning for some landscape which I didnt get much off… serious case of right light wrong location.. annoying to say the least… anyway I looked into a field close to me and saw a few pheasants cowering in the grass… I stalked them slowly for about 30 mins until they got used to me… 2 of em let me get quite close… here are my favourites of what I personally think are one of, if not thee, most beautiful bird found in Ireland:

There are a few more here for anyone interested:

All where taken with the 5D and 300mm F4 IS both with and without a 1.4x Convertor. I ended up manually focusing as it was really difficult to lock focus through the reeds and grass…!

    Comments…?

Nice shots… the first is my fav too. I like the detail and colour in the second as well.

No wonder they were cowering in the grass though… the pheasant shooting season has just started…

That’s what worried me – that you could get so close and the daft critter just stood there. Mind you, maybe he’s just right because the boys with guns don’t blast ’em till they’re flying!

The second shot is my fave. I like being able to see the colours in his chest and wings.

I’d be with Pete on this one. The second shot is fantastic, great colours, pin sharp, lovely dof. Nice work Richie.

Yeah the season starts November 1st… The wifes father used to be a gamekeeper.. this was always the busiest time of the year for him… To be honest these birds let me get within 5-6 meters of them… definitely recently released from a pen or something… I am undecided which I prefer more… something nice or quirkey about the first and the second has great quality and clarity… hmmmm there are others too but I think I like these the best…!

    Thanks for the comments

Well done, like the first one, good DOF, second is technically fine but hasn’t got the character of the first.

Yeah my father is like a child at Christmas – with the pheasant season re-opening for the winter. He doesn’t get as close as this though Richie, I’d say they are definitely half tame! Great images, number 2 being my favourite…

I can see the second one shows the bird off alot more – but for me the first one takes it .. Its just so cheeky to see the little head peeping up from the grass

I’m really impressed with the focus in the first.
