Cokin P or Cokin A???

Hi,

I have an 18-55mm lens. I am looking to buy a Coin filter holder kit. I asked the man a man at Jessops and he says for that size I need an ‘A’ Series but he didn’t have any in stock. When I spoke to another Jessops store, the man there said that the “Are you sure it’s an ‘A’ Series you’re after because it’s been discontinued and what you need is a ‘P’ series with an adapter ring.

So, my dad was in town today and picked up a ‘P’ Series holder and a 55mm adapter from Jessops but upon buying it, yet ANOTHER jessops employee says it’s the wrong one… I need the ‘A’ series!!!

So hoping you guys will be able to advsie me better than the indecisive Jessops staff.

For my 18-55mm Lense, do I need:

‘A’ Series
or
‘P’ Series with a 55mm Adapter

From what i understand the difference between the a and p series are the size of the filters

I dont see why the p filter would not work?? the a filter is more likely to not work as it might vignette the P is the way to go i would have thought.

if it fits on your lens your away :)

Yeah, I think that the A series are the original series that were developed for film cameras which generally had smaller diameter lenses. A lot of digital lenses now have a diameter of 72mm/77mm for which you’d need a P series. I think you’re better off with the P series if you intend expanding your gear over the years.

id would invest in the p series going forward as you upgrade your kit, you wont have to re-buy filters etc, plus i find the p series much more readily availible. imho:)

I always thought

P = Professional
A = Amateur

In any case, the P filters are larger and you’ll be glad you went for that size.

If you buy A series filters they’ll only be of use on smaller diameter lenses and you’ll find yourself needing to buy P series for any larger diameter lenses you get in the future, so future-proof yerself and buy P series to start with. I know. Cos I bought A series first!
