Colour settings and profiles for printing
-
Ger 208kParticipant
Hi,
I’m a bit confused about the optimum settings for printing.
Say I want to print an image on Permajet FB distinction.
In photoshop (1)what should I set the colour settings at,(2) what proof settings should I set, and finally, what should my printer settings be.If I then want to print on Hahnemuhle, what changes should I make.
My monitor is properly calibrated and I’m using an Epson 3880.
Ger.adamroryporterParticipantHi Ger,
I’ve never found the proof set up to be very good in Photoshop. I personally use an inexpensive program called Qimage for all my printing (on and epson sylus 9880) and find it great for profile handling, print nesting etc. From photoshop, I believe it’s quite similar (correct me if i’m wrong folks!) when you are happy with your image.
Hit print; in the print dialog window, go to the top right and select colour management then the document point. It will read Adobe RGB or sRGB depending on your image profile.
Down to the Colour Handling: drop down, choose photoshop manages colour.
Down to printer profile: select you paper / media profile. At rendering intent use the manufacturers recommended for your media, generally it’s Perceptual with Black Point Compensation ticked for papers and canvas.
Lastly don’t forget to go into print settings… and make sure the mode is set to Off (No Colour Adjustment), this makes sure photoshop is telling the printer how to print and now the printer driver doing it’s own thing in between.
I hope this helps, do a few wee test prints. But this is basically the same as qimage except i find that program far handier for printing more than one image :)

BarkerPhotographicParticipantThe most important thing is to use the correct “Profile” for your Printer / Ink / Paper combination. PermaJet have FREE downloadable Profiles from their site for Epson and Canon printers on their website, but even better they will create a FREE custom profile for any printer as long as it is for one of their papers. They have a guide to installing and using them here: http://www.permajet.com/pdf/how_to_install_and_use_icc_profiles.pdf” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
stcstcMemberyou need a profile for each paper / ink setup
so in your examples you need 2.
1 for the permajet distinction
1 for the hanemuhle paperyou then need to set the colour management to OFF in the print driver
then in photoshop print dialogue:
