We are planning a trip to Ireland for about 10-12 days this July or so this summer. We will for sure be hitting the southwest for that is where my family is from.
To help us plan I would like to ask you Gents and Ladies for a list of ” must sees” while in country. We will take your advise and plan out a good holiday. It would be nice to say hello to some of you as well as of course your time would permit. Thanks in advance for your thoughts , opinion and time
Cheers
WillemMemberOne of the most striking areas of Ireland for me is the Burren, in Co. Clare. It’s a unique dramatic landscape and has so much to see. I think the doolin caves and stalagtite are spectacular, there are lots of stone-age remains that ar quite atmospheric, and some great pubs and food! Plus you’re not far from Galway and Limerick…
justaguyParticipantPaddysnapperParticipantfstop89564ParticipantSo i guess there are only about 6 things to see or so……
Thanks for those who replied
MartinOCParticipantThere might be more than six. The problem is you could write a whole book on what to do, so more specific questions get more results.
When I was back during the summer I went down around Cork and Kerry, visiting restaurants and beaches, and a trip out to the Blasket islands.
Did lots of the usual places, stayed in Kinsale, Killarney and Dingle etc. Saw Cashel on the way down from Dublin, to see the Rock.
It was a great holiday, but I did have good weather.I have spent a lot of time in the Burren, I have a lot of family there, its pretty wonderful.
My favourite places in Ireland are the Aran Islands and Donegal.I was home for a wedding earlier in the year and stayed at a beautiful hotel in Ballymoney, Wexford which had a great spa and golf-course beside the sea, I bet there are more amazing hotels around the country giving great rates in these hard times.
Northern Ireland is suppose to be beautiful too. Wicklow is beautiful too, I love Glendalough.

fstop89564ParticipantWoW our vacation is coming together……..will print and give these suggetions to the MRS………..she can take what you guys and gals have suggested and do a good holiday and some. we want to go north as well.
I just want to see things you guys like and not something out of a book……………personal suggestions weigh in 1000% HIGHER in my book than something that is in a tour book.
My brother and his family came over a couple of years back and they loaned us a book or two and my wife has bought a couple of books. I trust you folks more………when in rome do as the romans……….THANKS A MILLION TIMES OVER
fstop89564ParticipantLiam2673Participantfstop,
a major consideration is how long you want to spend in a car while you are here. if you are here for 10-12 days, then you can reasonably expect to cover 3 or 4 areas reasonably well.
If we assume you fly into Shannon (since you are hitting the South West), then I would say you should choose between either going to Clare/ Galway and Connemara (West) or going to Kerry/ Cork (South West). It would be difficult to cover both areas in that time. (Maybe someone can correct me if they think I am wrong).
The Ring of Kerry is well documented, and is impressive. If you are there in the first week of July, and you are fit, you might consider doing the Ring of Kerry cycle, this a one day event where about 3000 cyclists cover the Ring. Its a great day and a great way to see the sights.
Galway is probably the best large town. Killarney is extremely touristy, though not in an unpleasant way.
Connemara equally beautiful to the Ring.
My own favourite part of Ireland the part of West Cork that looks on to Kerry: the Beara peninsula and the Sheeps Head peninusla.
BMParticipantTwo places in Ireland guaranteed to spoil a touring holiday:
Alihees and Baltimore – both in West Cork.If you visit them you will not want to leave.
Be warned!
cathaldParticipantDid someone mention a pint,my ears always prick up when beer is mentioned :D
So if your heading north (as in as far north as you can go) give me a shout
Oh by the way up here you can visit the Inishowen area(Malin Head,Buncrana etc)
Glenveigh national park,the poison glen,FanadCathal
