Compact Camera Choices

I want to get a reasonable quality compact camera to bring on holiday to S.America later this year, as bringing my DSLR is not really a safe option, and my considerations were:

Work on AA rechargeable batteries rather than proprietary lithium pack.
Optical viewfinder rather than have the LCD screen on all the time.
    Reasonable shutter speed range.
    Image Stabilisation would be nice
    Compactness

I think I?ve narrowed it down to either the canon A710IS or the A640.

Can anyone give me reasons for or against either of these two or suggest anything else I should consider ?

A640 would be good. I’m getting the A540 as a toy…don’t need a flippy out lcd screen. The new A550 might be worth a look in March/April.

forgot to add…you should just bring your slr….you’ll regret it if you don’t. South America is safe enough…as long as you’re careful.

Thanks for that. Re: the SLR, I?m going on a 3 week trip consisting of some time in the jungle and hiking in the Andes, carrying everything (or having it carried for me) pretty much everywhere I go, so I?m thinking about weight and size and the risk of me dropping it in a river as much as the peril it might be in from local miscreants intent on mischief !! I?d love to bring it but I think the cons outweigh the pros in that case.

I like the idea of having IS but it is a bit more expensive?
