I regretted moving to Vista from XP for ages. Vista still
drives me nuts but I’d be cautious about moving to W7
if only because it’s a disruptive process seeing as I work on
    the computer all day long.

If you’re happy enough with Vista and W7 is going to cost money
then I’d stick it out for a while.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard some bad reports of those who have upgraded to Win7 from older versions and their recommended approach would be to start from scratch with Windows 7

Of course there are always flip sides to this, so I’ll leave this open to those on the site who might have had different experiences of Win7

You must also ask yourself, what will 7 give me that Vista doesn’t ? Does Vista work for you ?

    Hi Saber,

I bypassed Vista and went from XP Pro to Win 7 Pro. I can say that for the most part – i have had a trouble free run. The Pro version lets you run older software in “XP Mode” – where the home edition will not. DO not go 64 bit.

Vista was junk – and the world agreed by not buying it.

I agree with petew – a fresh clean install is much preferred to an ‘upgrade’.

It all depends what you require from your O/S. Do you want it to boot – then you straight into an application, internet, etc – or do you require more? Do you like widgets, gadgets, transparent toolbars etc etc?

Depending on your hardware speed – perhaps the best – and cheapest way to go would be to go back to Windows XP Service Pack 3. Your system will be pretty stable, very very fast and have the ability to run any software you decide to run on it. no compatibility issues.

From the control panel – make a list of the drivers required using the System icon, and download them from the manafacturers site before hand. If they are not available for XP – windows update should be able to find them. The most important one to get is the Network Card. Then you can google what you need afterwards.

    Back up your files.

Boot with the XP CD – delete all partitions & create a fresh one.

    Format – install.

Should take about 2/3 hours start to finish.

    ciao

I changed from vista to win 7 on my laptop recently. I did a fresh install and it has been largely trouble free and
performance wise win7 is way ahead of vista. One mistake I made was not getting (as is suggested above) all
my drivers in place before doing the upgrade so I have run in to a couple of issues with things like a web cam and
an in built card reader but I can live with these problems.
The only other advice I would give you is to maybe look at adding some memory to make your vista work faster
but I think if it was me again I would definitely be looking at moving off vista and either back to XP or forwards
    to Win7.
