MartinOCParticipantI’m not a computer expert myself but a guy who builds his own computers recommended this site to me when I wanted to upgrade.
You can work through it to find what exactly you can get for your computer, and according to him they deal in high quality components.
They have a great interface to figure out what you need.As with any company on the web you might want to google around for user feedback.

AndyLParticipantCrucial has a program that will interrogate your computer and tell you how much RAM it can take. Then go to 7day shop to buy it, but make sure you get the right type…
BrocaghjohnParticipantThanks folks I ran the crucial scan before I came on the forum but it cant identify the manufacturer as the computer was built by a local guy a few years ago.Thats why I posted the info here in the hope somebody would know.
Thanks
John
BMParticipantYour computer has 2 slots so you can buy 2 modules (chips) of RAM. If you want the maximum your PC will take, each module will need to be 4GB – and they will be expensive. Plus you need to buy in matched pairs, so your existing 512MB will end up in the bin.
Price two 2GB modules.
Oh, I always buy from Crucial, even if they appear more expensive than other places. Crucial specialisaes in memory (and it’s an important part of your user experience). 7DS specialises in batteries and stuff (not true, I know, but you know what I mean).
ossie13ParticipantHi I always buy my memory from ORCA
http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/
Go to the home page and select the Orca Memory Scanner and it will bring up the memory that is suitable for your computer!!
Cheers Steve
Alan RossiterParticipantMaybe I’m missing something but your maximum memory capacity as you list is 8Gb. Obviously you need to see how many slots you have to accommodate this. But if you’re running XP the most that’s usable is 4Gb…but I could be missing something here too!
Alan
AedanCParticipantWindows XP 32 bit version will only use just under 4GB, if you want to use more you’ll need to use a 64 bit operating system.

BrocaghjohnParticipantHi folks just ran the orca scanner and it stated 2GB was the max I could run.
John
joe_elwayParticipantSounds about right. 2GB was the normal max until recently. XP and Vista x86 (what you normally get) only support up to 2Gb RAM. x64 gives you more RAM access (and probably driver issues thanks to poor OEM’s).
However, watch out for PC’s with 4Gb RAM. Often, they don’t make all of it available. E.G. my dell laptop at work can only see 3.2GB RAM. That’s why you see machines being sold with 3GB RAM. It’s to prevent action by unhappy customers who pay for but can’t use the full 4GB.
BrickerParticipantHey,
I recently upgraded my ram on my HP. It was at 256, but I uped it in the shop (years ago) to 512…..
I did a online scan that gave me the type I needed and on the HP site I found I could only take 2gb.
I got them online from an Iirsh company (name escapes me but I have it at home if you need it) , delivered to me next day by DHL.
If your not sure what type of memory your pc takes, take out (carfully) the one thats currently in it and I woouldnt be surprisd if theres a little white sticker on it with the details….. well there was on mine!
And, it was the best 80€ I have spent in years…. on memory that is!
Alan RossiterParticipantTry http://www.memoryc.com. They’re based in Celbridge and they’re fast as well as having an online tool to find the correct memory for your PC. They do flash cards too.

markcapilitanParticipantTo follow on from what Joe said – does anyone know how to make full use of the 4GB if you have that much installed…I do, but know Windows doesn’t use all.

XP supports up to 3 Gig not 2. XP64 can address more, but as has been pointed out you now get into issues with 32 bit apps running on a 64 bit OS.
Put 3 in it, run XP and your machine will fly.
