hi rm,
quite a set-I take it you don’t like concrete-
The toning in the first two seems a little heavy,
though maybe it suits the subject-
and the lens is showing signs of distortion-You’ve chosen to show pictures which are not particularly likeable,
but of the 5, I think no.4 is probably the most succesful,
though I can’t explain why-All in all,
a good examole of how photography is a useful tool
in the critique of architecture-
Though I like concrete as a material,
its often let down by poor design, detailing, and carpentry-j
rmMemberI think I must have been listening to too much Joy Division lately
I don’t mind concrete as a rule. There’s a wall in Picadilly garderns in Manchester that I think works really well (although it costs them a fortune to keep the graphiti off it. But to be honest I tried to pick a tint to make them looks as miserable as possable.
I really strugled to get any kind of contrast into the first two with out loosing what detail there is in the shadow or burning the highlights. It’s not that it was particularly over cast on the day or that the light was generally that flat but that’s just the kind of brutish buildings the blocks at Ballymun are. That any one was expected to live in them is a crime.
The second set where taken on the way home last night (I’ve taken to carrying a Leica digilux-3 round). It’s the first time I’ve actually been in the carpark behind Meadows & Byrne/Fresh and I just felt that, given there’s an atempt give the outside a bit of style and the shops them selves are a decent, the innards of the building are realy mean and ugly. It’s kind of still new and in a way shiny in there but all the parking spaces and tiny, many of them will be imposable to get access to. Thecar park will enventually look over a central court yard but when it’s done it’ll probably make the place feel like a prison than brighten it up!
In terms of distortion I made an effort to straighten 3 & 4 up (over did the pinch on 4!). The others are straight from the camera. Should of got on my knees for the last one. Will know for next time.
