confused by lenses

I seem to have a mental block with lenses so I will list what I have and what I am looking to achieve and hopefully one of you nice folks will point me in the right direction :D I want to get some wildlife shots that allow me to zoom in as close as possible without scaring said wildlife away. But I dont want limited to purely wildlife. It would be nice to be able to use it without a tripod but not essential as I can sometimes have real unsteady hands.
I have a canon 500d and currently use a tameron with the following written on the barrel
AF aspherical XR LD (IF) 28-300 1:3.5-6.3
it does a fairly decent zoom but I find it is going incredible soft at full zoom. I like the fact that it starts at 28, as a result it is on my camera most of the time. I took it to jessops to be checked as it was second hand and was told that was the way it is with that lense.Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Canon AF) (came with the package and not used since I got the above and the macro)
I have a dedicated macro lense Tameron 90mm
and of course the canon kit lense.many thanks in advance :D
shutterbugParticipantHi Connie,
I use the Sigma 50-500mm for wildlife, it is nicknamed the Bigma and it is quite
hefty, though saying that I have managed to use it handheld but always prefer it on
the tripod, I am nearly sure I saw one in the Equipment for sale section, the other
alternative is the 150-500mm which is also Sigma which is a good lense also.
Both of these lenses have an aperture of 6.3 on the 500 end, which I havent really
had a problem with, it would probably be ok with a 1.4 or 1.7 teleconvertor but
doesnt really stretch to a 2.00 unless it is extremely bright conditions, and as far as
I am aware it would be manual focus when using convertors. You should consider trading in the 70-300 if you are not using it, if you are going down
the new route, if not try to sell it privately, not much point in having two lenses almost
the same.Hope this info helps some.
connieParticipantthanks Jenny I will be selling the 70-300 in my local free ads paper and it is still under warranty. I wanted to hold off until I could get the other lense checked for faults. :) I never thought about trading it in….never knew that was an option :)
shutterbugParticipantDo you have a decent camera shop near you? always worth checking locally before
resorting to the internet to buy, especially if you are like me and want it NOW! :)connieParticipantI have a jessops but the lad there was really non commital. He just referred to the largest lense, so I thought I would pick the forums brains as you guys may experience of using the lenses you talk about.
