Converting files to CMYK

Elements 6.0 doesn’t seem to have the facility to convert files to CMYK. Does anyone know how else I can do it, for free?!

Also, I’ve noticed a number of people mention colour shifts etc when they’ve converted the colour space – is this something I should worry about?

I’m not very good with computer-speak, so please speak slow and loud and hopefully I’ll understand!

    Cheers.

why do you want to convert, is it for a mag or something?

if so let them worry about it

It’s for the IPF Yearbook – they ask for CMYK. Last year I didn’t bother to convert and the picture they printed had a strange colour balance!

Colour conversion is a bit tricky. First and foremost you need a calibrated monitor. Then you need a profile from the printer or magazine people. The problem is that the CMYK colourspace(s) is/are much smaller (=less colours) than the RGB colour space(s). This means that many RGB colours have to be converted to the nearest in the CMYK colour space. And that’s where the colour problems can happen.

The conversion itself is pretty easy, you can preview (simulation) the conversion in Photoshop and then just click a button – however I don’t know if Elements has this feature.

Usually the magazines do these conversions themselves as it takes the right equipment/software and some experience.

    All the best,

    Carsten

No version of Elements is capable of conversion to CMYK. All versions of Photoshop can though, so if you have access to a very old version you’ll be able to open a jpeg or a tiff file and convert it to CMYK there,

Thanks all – looks like I’m best leaving these things to people who know!
