Corrupt SD Cards…help! Lightroom, card or reader?
-
Paula N PhotographyParticipant
I have a couple of Sandisk Transcend 8G cards which I have had for the last few years. I use them properly so I think and format each time I use them etc The first one became corrupt a few weeks ago and now I have a problem with yet another. I was trying to import the pics into Lightroom. Images which I had previously taken which had been deleted during formatting at first appeared and then I got a message saying
” The files appear to be unsupported or damaged (90)”
and
“The file is from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in LR (1)”I’m very quickly trying to figure out whether it is the version of LR I am using (that thinking was prompted by some discussion online when I googled the above), my camera (canon 5d), the card reader or just bad luck with the cards themselves?
I can’t afford to wait for this to happen when on a job so if anyone can help me please help!! I have ordered new cards and a card reader but I am petrified in case there is more to it. Have a wedding coming up soon too!

When I was using SD cards, I often had the files becoming corrupt, but I also found that if I defragmented the files using software, the files very often repaired themselves. Sandisk cards are generally very good & I would be surprised if you purchased more than one “faulty” one, unless they came from the same batch. It’s possible that your RAW files are not supported with your current version of Lightroom, but there is usually a way to “update” the type of files that it can recognise ( not sure if it’s an add on, driver or update that works), maybe someone familiar with Lightroom can advise you. You could also try to use DPP instead of lightroom. If you’ve been connecting the camera directly to your computer via USB to upload the photos, try to use a card reader instead or vice versa.
