    Excuse the long read
Short version. If you use a card reader to download files from a card and they appear corrupted. Put the card back in the camera and hook up the usb and try downloading with the camera makers software. (picasa got intact jpegs, but had to use the eos utility to get the cr2 files) . It worked for me .

Long version A friend asked me to take some photos at his mothers 90th birthday party at weekend. beer and food payment. I did the mass with one camera (40d) and brand name card and the meal etc with a second camera and generic card (20d)
Was downloading pics this morning using a card reader. Got the mass fine but there was thunderstorm while I was downloading the second card. Computer plugged into mains. Power went out after one of the bolts of lightning. When it had passed I went to finish download and all the cr2 images were corrupted and most of the jpegs. Not good. Tried copying to a new folder but the images would ‘fade’ and get lines and color casts when I attempted to view or edit. It was like there is a mini thumbnail in the file that was ok but the main image was scrambled. Tried various editors but no joy. Dowloaded card recovery software but it could only retrieve the ‘corrupted’ files . lots of oh f*****ks and hair pulling I figured i would connect camera to computer. I had to dowload drivers for the 20d from canons site and associated software. (I had the eos utility for a later camera but it would not recognise the older camera.) The usb port is broken on the 40 which is why i used the 20. When i plugged in the camera i got picasa or ex brouser as options to connect to 20d. I went with picasa and the jpegs started to appear. all of them and I could view full size and edit them. I saved them to the hard drive straight away. I was sooooo happy at least all was not lost. Still no raw files though. I opened eos utility and it started to download cr2 and jpg s . When it had finished , there they were complete, all of them . I dont know why the card appeared corrupted when using the reader ( I compared what I got in 3 separate downloads and it was the same files that appeared corrupted. I also downloaded files from a different generic card with no problems) I would have thought it would mangle different files each time i downloaded if it was the reader . Yet they could be dwnloaded from the camera which says the card is ok. A new card reader is in my future and new name brand cards. the 20 is a bit too expensive to keep for reading cards
