Course or not???

    HI guys,

I’m looking to increase my photography skills. I live in Donegal and can only see one course that is local enough for me to attend regularly. Its a one night a week course in Derry that runs for 33 weeks. I’ve phoned up to get further details of what the course actually contains but I nobody at the college could provide much details other than the course name. This has put me off the course as well as the 33 week duration for what I’m assuming is a basic course.

I realise that working alongside a pro and learning for them would probably be the best way to learn however as its a small area, it is unlikely that any photographer would be keen on training a potential future rival.

I have come across the following course online http://www.inst.org/photography-courses/index.htm” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; which seems to include absolutely everything I’m looking for and more however it does seem pretty expensive at 638 euro. Has anyone taken the course?

I should have stated that my aim is to increase my knowledge on photography, particularly in the area of portraits and outdoor portraits. I have taken a lot of photos of friends and family and the feedback has been very positive, so much so that some friends are encouraging me to prepare a brochure for them to distribute to their clients who they are convinced will be looking to hire me. However, I’m pretty cautious and am well aware that because friends and family think people will be happy to pay, they are most probably biased and I’d like to do a course to cover gaps in my knowledge (which has so far come from books and experimentation) before I’d even consider charging a fee.

    All advice more than welcome

Out of curiosity is there any camera clubs in your localities?
Personally ‘speaking’ you’ll learn a lot from the people in these
clubs who have the experience & know how. My own skills, in
my view have improved due to the time given by senior members.

i’m in the Ballyshannon camera club and although i only went few times, i look forward to start again in September…it is only a small group and could probably do with some “young” people who like to push new ideas and learn new things. it was nice to meet people with the same hobby in the same area.. sometimes it’s nice to go out taking pictures with someone else and sharing views and experience. Not sure where coach is from but ballyshannon is not too far away for Dallan (jodal)

Unfortunately Ballyshannon is a bit out of my reach as I’m from Inishowen. I think there might be a camera club in Buncrana so that might be a good avenue to pursue.
