if you read the small print on Facebook they own every image you put up there.

Link? Trying to find that but not seeing anything. If I put up a photo on Facebook, I still own the image, no?

Surely that doesn’t mean anyone can grab images from their site and use it?

You always own the image and the copyright to the image. You simply grant Facebook a license to show your content. You are not granting facebook ownership of your images nor are you enabling any paper or otherwise permission to take and use your images.

I would definity send an invoice.
I had a similar situation. I sent a copy of a few shots to a local paper of a hunt which was being filmed by channel 4. I asked were they interested in the photos. I got no reply but 2 of the images were used along with an article on the hunt in the following weeks edition. About 1/3 page photo. The photos were credited to channel 4. I e mailed the journalist twice but got no reply. I then rang the paper and asked for accounts. I told them I wantes to send an invoice for the misuse of my images. They immediatly gave me the editors e mail. I e mailed him and told him I wanted money and a printed correction. In the meantime I had put a piece on my face book page which generated a fair bit of interest. I got a reply back from the paper with the usual, we get so many photos there was a mix up, and a check for €50 the following week.
I would say keep invoicing them, not just for the front cover but for the other ones too. And put a piece on your face book page. This is kinda important I think, because if someone saw the magazine with your image but attributed to someone else, they may think you ‘stole’ the image.

Another point, is the photographer that got credited with the photo an actual person? or just a made up name

Finally a link . click on the custom pricing and pick ireland as the country and you will get an idea of what to invoice them. I dont know how accurate it is with the prices but its a guide and you if you use the price off it, you can show them how you arrived at the price

indeed noel, but by uploading on Facebook you also agree to give them license to use and sell images as and when they please. yes you can delete the image but they retain the right as long as anyone else who has shared the image leaves it there also.
