Craft council of Ireland

John GriffinParticipant
I’ve been doing some small craft fairs recently and i’m looking at doing some of the bigger ones. I need to get into the craft tents at the big ones, they are run by the Craft Council of Ireland. The problem is that they don’t recognise photography as a craft. It seems to be ignorance of photography to me. When you look at some of the stuff that is considered craft it makes you wonder.
For example: Card making! From what i’ve seen of it, basically you get a piece of coloured cardboard, cut out a picture of a fairy or leprechaun, stick it to the cardboard, stick some glitter on, put a message on the card, include an envelope and job done!
Here’s another one i’ve seen, candles with pictures on them, i actually asked the maker where he gets the pictures and he told me he takes them from websites on the internet. So my question is how is this craft and photography isn’t?
I’m a landscape and wildlife photographer, i create images that people pay alot of money for so they can hang them on their walls. Painting is a craft too as is printmaking – including: Etching, Lithography and Screen Printing, why not photography?
I applied for membership 6 months ago and haven’t even recieved an acknowledgement. Sent several emails and got no response.
I’ve been told i can apply for a trade stand outdoors, it costs a fortune and i have to provide my own shelter or awning. I’d probably end up stuck between the John Deere and Massey Ferguson stands.
It’s madness in my opinion and certainly shows the way people think of our art.
Check out this link for a more comprehensive list of the bone fide crafts. I know for a fact that most of the jewllery comes from Asia.http://www.ccoi.ie/content/view/143/250/

Cardmaking indeed – although even that’s probably more skilful an endeavor
than candlemaking…Rob.

Hebe Jebus ! I hope he asked for permission. Yep , quite confused about this one, if someone could throw a bit of light on this one i’d be grateful. There was an Arts & Crafts fair on recently in the RDS and i was told that photographers would not be present, yet the Arts group here in Meath have alot of photographers as members. Maybe we’re just not arty farty enough :x
