Critique and question…

I don’t know if i should have posted these here instead of in the people forum. i think it’s fairly obvious, i’m more comfortable with portraits! i would appreciate any thoughts on processing and poses.
Question, i’ve been researching wedding album layouts and came across a site that said 85% of wedding photographers shoot in landscape format for the album. i know i’ve read something before about wasted pixels bla bla bla, can you explain the theory in 10 words or less? so what do you reckon, do you shoot the day with the album in mind?
thanks!

SeoirseMemberChristina,
These are wonderful wedding pictures.
They are so completely natural.I’m sure the b&g were very pleased?
I would be.Well done.
:DOh, on the album question …I’m not sure there is a need for you
to stick to any 85/15 formula. Just keep shooting the way you shoot.I only shot two weddings but I was using a 6×6 Mamiya
so the pics were square and I didn’t have to think of orientation. As regards the pixels question I can’t help you as I have never used
a digital camera other than a simple point & shoot.
Maybe someone else will comment and help you there?summerdreamnMemberthank you seoirse! they haven’t seen them yet so i’m still at panic stations! :) cross fingers.
johnnymcParticipantHi Christina,
I think these are beautiful images with great processing. I can’t flaw them.
Well done,
John
TinyMemberHi Christina,
Got to agree with the others when i say they are great shots and well done,
As for your question of shooting with the album in mind, i say no… i do not. Not for the weddings i have done to date, i would say your only thoughts are on getting the best photos you can and capturing the mood and feel of the day for the B&G, worrying about the ablum an start when you are in front of your computer, having said all that, i am not a professional photographer.

easParticipantHi Christina,
Lovely set of photos. I love the clarity + subtle toning. To be critical I’d say the framing could be better on the couple shot (and I’m wondering why the groom is holding the bouquet?) and personally I’d like to see the grooms hands in shot 3, particularly if the ring is on his finger.
On the 85% thing….I’d say it would depend a lot on the type + format of album you use. With all the options (landcape, portrait, square, coffee table, flush mount, traditional etc.) I think it’s hard for any stat like that to stand up. I’ve more or less stopped doing full spreads in my coffee table books due to the gutter interfering. Full spreads on flush mounts are nice but I find they can become too much page after page.
Personally I try and get landscape and portraits orientation of most important shots and of the bride + groom portraits.
summerdreamnMemberthanks, savo :) exactly what i was looking for. photo 4, he was actually trying to hide his champagne glass in her flowers. photo 3 was before the service and i wish i had framed it better. i think i will have to ensure i do take photos in both landscape and portrait as i tend to lean towards portrait orientation. don’t know why. they are going for a square album and i’m trying to create as much balance as possible. watch this space. thanks!
summerdreamnMemberBrianParticipantLovely shots. 1 and 2 in particular are stunning portraits IMHO. Can I ask what lens and lighting used? Looks like natural light with a reflector perhaps?
summerdreamnMemberhi brian, thanks. i only used window light. and the walls were a bright white so no reflector! :)
freddie59ParticipantlousyParticipantReally nice set C I’m sure you’re very happy with them, I know I would.

Echo the comments these are really great images – the black and white is really strong and they look very natural
sean1098MemberAs already said…the first two shots are great(the processing makes them), The last shot is well captured.
Lovely work.
sean.
jessthespringerParticipantLovely work Christina, well done. Lovely tones and detail on them, quite relaxed too, although I did wonder about the groom holding the flowers too.
I’ve only shot one wedding, so I’m not in a great position to answer your question, but, I’m glad you asked as I wondered the same myself.
I can say that I feel I should have given the album more consideration when I was shooting, by that I mean considered the print format. It all
worked out okay in the end, but some of my 10×8 & 5×4 crops were a tad tight.Planning the pages and layout of the album is worth doing before making a trip to the printers, I didn’t. I ended up with 48 prints extra
In fairness though, that worked out okay too, but it’s not a mistake I’d like to make again.Sinead
