Crow? Raven? Same thing?
-
ciaranParticipant
Since I’m a complete Philistine when it comes to birds, I’ll call this guy a crow for now. Exposing for black in harsh sun light is tough
RobMemberVery nice Ciaran.
A fierce looking beastie indeed. Beautifully exposed in
my humble opinion, and beautifully composed. Pin sharp
where it matters and lovely dof.
As to the crow/raven question, here’s another ignoramus.
Mostly I just call them birds…Rob.
joe_elwayParticipantAnother class shot Ciaran. You don’t post in here ofen but when you do, it’s worth the wait.
jb7ParticipantAn altogether more contented specimen than Pete the Bloke’s recent study in disgruntlement-
lovely detail in the plumage,
to use a faintly pythonesque word-
though there is still something faintly comical about these birds-j

Nice shot, it’s a Rook.

Now if only someone would put up a post with all three – crow, raven and rook – so the
philistines among us can confidently identify these birds in the future…John GriffinParticipantNo such thing as a crow really, its the crow family or corvids, its made up of the Rook, Jackdaw, Magpie, Hooded/ Grey Crow, Carrion Crow(v. rare in ireland), Raven, Jay and Chough(posted pic of one a while back). And that concludes todays wildlife lesson
ExpresbroParticipantI always think Rooks look quite majestic looking..especially the big guys. This is a great shot Ciaran…it is very hard to get any great detail on them….bit like trying to do the same on an all black cat.
Just thinking back to our conversation yesterday when looking at this guy..and I actually think he almost does have a personality…like he’s wondering whether he could make it before that bug he’s watching scurries underground..
earthairfireParticipantNice Job Ciaran.
Lovely bokeh, and almost perfect DOF. I say almost, as the back leg is out of focus. Minor point, but I know you’re a perfectionist…
Great job getting so much detail out of the black feathers.

ciaranParticipantI’m a little bit pissed off about the DOF on this one. There was BAGs of light to work with, so I could have stopped down quite a bit. I have such a bad habit of shooting wide open and don’t think about the consequences.
Noely FParticipantThey can fill a pouch under their beaks with food….like mini Pelicans

I never knew that.
Very interesting.
Thanks Noel!
